Job overview

This is a full time consultant post in the Plastic Surgery Department with a major interest in microvascular breast reconstructive surgery. The role is offered for a fixed period of 12 months.

The Plastic Surgery Breast Reconstructive department is a regional service covering Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Bristol to provide specialist breast cancer and reconstructive surgical expertise.

The post holder will join Mr Sherif Wilson, Miss Philippa Jackson and Miss Naomi Patel in delivering this service. The Breast Reconstruction team routinely cross covers each other's patients. The successful candidate will have regular elective theatre and outpatient capacity, will be required to be part of the Oncoplastic Breast MDT and will participate in the Plastic Surgery Service and on call rota.

Main duties of the job

The Plastic Surgery Department covers congenital and acquired conditions including skin cancer, hand surgery, lower limb trauma, breast reconstruction, head and neck malignancy, sarcoma, burns service and laser therapy. Combined clinics are held in association with other specialists including head and neck surgery, Ortho Plastics, oncologists and dermatology. Specialist clinics include hands, pigmented lesions, sarcoma and breast reconstruction.

Dedicated plastics and burns general anaesthetic operating theatres and three local anaesthetic operating theatres provide 24 hour access to general emergency theatres for out of hours trauma cases. Secretarial support and office accommodation are shared with other members of the consultant team.

There will be an on call commitment to delivering an emergency adult and paediatric plastic surgery service and applicants must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in general plastic surgery. The department has dedicated emergency plastic surgery beds on Gate 33A, including seven burns unit beds, and shares elective capacity with other specialties on Gate 7A. Access to ITU and HDU beds is available.

Person specification Experience
  • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 10 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical or medical training, three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post, or equivalent.
  • Training in diagnosis and treatment of routine plastic surgery conditions.
  • Specialist knowledge, training and interest in management of microsurgical breast reconstruction.
  • Experience and training in surgical management of common, non specialised conditions in children, including trauma.
  • Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship in an approved UK or overseas position or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Breast Microsurgery Fellowship in an approved UK or overseas position or demonstrable equivalent experience.
Qualifications
  • Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent.
  • Full registration with GMC.
  • Must have CCT or have submitted an application for CESR in Plastic Surgery.
  • Higher academic qualification (e.g., MD or MSc).
Knowledge
  • Evidence of recent CME and reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in audit projects and written out reports.
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Knowledge of the political context within which we operate.
  • Up to date evidence of completion of audits.
  • Completion of a general management course or programme.
  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.
Skills

Employment terms

The successful applicant(s) will normally commence at the minimum of the salary scale unless they have previous NHS service at the same band. Progression through the scale is by annual increments.
