Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist (Ocular Oncology)

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the post of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Ocular Oncology. This is a part time role, offering 4.75 sessions per week.

The post is predominantly outpatient based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, City Road. In addition, daily virtual vetting of new Ocular Oncology referrals is the responsibility of the senior doctors and consultants within the service. The successful candidate will be expected to cover surgical operating lists as the lead surgeon. The successful candidate would be expected to support the current International Ocular Oncology fellowship training programme.

We expect the postholder to develop close liaison between the VR service and the oncology service through attendance at the weekly MDT.

In addition you will be representing the service and acting as the lead for our diagnostic pathway plan.

The successful applicant will have completed FRCOphth/MRCOphth and must be registered with the GMC. Applicants need to evidence demonstrable training and experience in all aspects of Ocular Oncology.

Main duties of the job
  • Supervision of junior medical staff in the Ocular Oncology clinics and theatre lists.
  • Active participation in both formal and informal Oncology clinic teaching.
  • Clinical Oncology audit and research participation where relevant.
  • Running face to face new and follow up clinics.
  • Running virtual new and follow up clinics.
  • Vetting of new electronic referrals into the Ocular Oncology Service.
  • Running operating lists for ocular oncology surgery.
  • Supervision and training of Ocular Oncology fellows and other trainees at Moorfields.
  • Teaching of doctors in training, both formal and informal.
  • Attending the annual National CQUIN meeting for Ocular Oncology.
  • Participating in Ocular Oncology audits and research projects.

The Adult Ocular Oncology Service is currently under the direction of Professor Sagoo whereas the Retinoblastoma service, based at the Royal London Hospital, is directed by Mr Reddy. These supra regional services accept tertiary referrals from all over UK.

Person Specification Education / Qualifications
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration (with a 'License to Practise').
  • ARSAC licence holder PhD /MD
  • PhD /MD
Experience
  • Completed Fellowship training in Ocular Oncology and Retinoblastoma
  • Surgically Competent in Ocular Oncology and Retinoblastoma
  • Completed Fellowship training in medical or surgical retina
  • Consultant experience in Ocular Oncology and Retinoblastoma
Knowledge
  • Understanding the principals of radiotherapy
  • Knowledge of dosimetry
  • Publications in Ocular Oncology
Personal Qualities
  • Ability to work as part of a team or on own initiative within a changing environment
  • Self motivated
