Job overviewThe post holder will be expected to play a pivotal role in the GI service at RMH for all patients. The post holder will be required to participate in the RMH out-of-hours medical oncology consultant on-call rota. The post holder will be employed by The Royal Marsden Hospital. The job planning process will be carried out in partnership with the employer and employee. The post holder will report to The Head of the GI Unit and be managed within the Division of Cancer Services. Tumour specific commitments will be conducted in the GI unit. Office space and secretarial support will be provided in the Sutton branch of the Royal Marsden. Resident doctors (HEE trainees and clinical fellows) also support the clinical and research activities of the GI team.
Main duties of the job- To supervise (clinical and educational supervision) doctors in training in the GI team and to undertake teaching as appropriate.
- To attend the unit specific MDMs, clinics and departmental meetings.
- To lead Inpatient board rounds and reviews on the designated days.
- To participate in and support the multidisciplinary care team which includes Medical Oncologists, Clinical Oncologists, Surgeons, the relevant junior team, Specialist Nursing Staff, Therapists, Dietician, Social worker, Palliative Care and Counselling for patients and families.
- The post holder will be expected to participate fully in Peer Review preparation and visits, and Peer Review required Audits.
- As a senior member of the medical team, the post holder would provide leadership and support for the effective development of the GI Unit specific services discussed within the 6 monthly operational policy meetings.
- The post holder will contribute to the development of the departmental objectives and would manage resources within the approved plan. The consultant would be part of the Cancer Services Division and would be accountable to the Divisional Medical Director.
- The post holder will be expected to work closely with consultant colleagues in other oncology services in South-West London and RM Partners and participate in related meetings.
- To work within the department to seek ways of improving the efficiency of the service without sacrificing quality.
- Broad based experience in oncology, including systemic therapies
- Significant experience in clinical and translational research
- Significant interest and experience in the management of acute oncology patients
- Undergraduate and postgraduate training experience
- Management and leadership
- Full GMC Registration and licence to practice
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent qualifications
- Higher degree MD or PHD
