University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Medical Oncologist for a 12 month fixed term post to join our nationally and internationally recognised oncology service. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary team delivering high quality, patient centred cancer care within Breast Medical Oncology. The post will involve the management of patients with breast cancer across the full disease pathway, including early, locally advanced, and metastatic breast cancer. The role includes active participation in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, outpatient clinics, and inpatient care as required.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will deliver consultant level medical oncology care for patients with breast cancer across both University College London Hospital and Whittington Hospital, providing systemic anti cancer therapy and specialist clinical input in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The role includes active participation in MDT meetings, outpatient clinics, ward rounds, and the breast oncology on call and ward rotas as required. The postholder will also contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, including the supervision and training of specialty trainees, and will play an active role in governance, service development, and continuous improvement within the wider oncology department. Flexibility is expected to support service evolution across both UCLH and Whittington Hospital, reflecting the complexity of breast oncology care and allowing scope for the development of individual clinical, operational, and leadership interests.

Person Specification Qualifications / Certification
  • Medical degree and completed General Professional Training, or equivalent
  • Higher academic degree e.g. MD or PhD (or in final stages of preparation), or evidence of an equivalent level of attainment in research publications
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (or equivalent)
  • Meet one of the following:
    • Have your CCST and be on the specialist register;
    • Be within 6 months of your CCST;
    • As a Locally Employed Doctor, Specialty Doctor or Specialist Grade submit your evidence portfolio to the GMC via the Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) in time for approval to be on the Specialist Register within six months of appointment (exact start date will be discussed with the candidate at interview). Non UK trained doctors must provide evidence at interview that they are eligible for full GMC registration and entry on the Specialist Register in Medical Oncology.
Experience
  • Experience of and commitment to multidisciplinary working
  • Wide experience in managing treatment and follow up of patients with cancer
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
Skills
  • Proven ability and commitment to carry out original research, leading to publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Proven ability in clinical research
  • Ability and commitment to teach in a clinical setting
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload, delegate responsibility as appropriate and supervise staff
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment & on own initiative
  • The ability to promote teamwork and motivate colleagues
  • Leadership skills and the ability to take forward service developments
  • Excellent communication skills - verbal and written; good command of written and spoken English
  • GCP certification for clinical trial work
  • Proven ability to attract grant funding to support research
  • Proven ability to translate research activities into a clinical and organisational context
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the Clinical Governance framework of the NHS (including research governance) and understanding of current changes in the organisation and management structures of the NHS; ability to act within these parameters
  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles of resource and budgetary management
General
  • The highest ethical and professional standards in research, education and clinical practice
  • Member of Medical Defence organisation

£109,725 to £145,478 a year + London weighting (+ on call Cat B 1%)
