Job Description
Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic (Upper Limb)

The department has developed a highly professional and commercially focused approach to delivering the highest standards of patient centred care.

The current junior medical staffing for Trauma & Orthopaedics across both sites includes several Specialist Trainee (North West Thames), Specialty Doctor, Core Trainee, Junior Clinical Fellow and FY1 posts.

There is a Trauma Co ordinator and Trauma Nurse Practitioner on each site. Each consultant reports professionally and managerially to the Divisional Management team, via their Clinical Service Lead and General Manager. You will be expected to agree annual objectives with your Clinical Service Lead and General Manager with fit with the needs of the service, division and trust.

Main duties of the job

Please note that the post may include on calls and will entail cross site working between the Chelsea, West Middlesex and NWL Elective Orthopaedic Centre sites.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be required to contribute to the upper limb and trauma service in a cross site capacity, as well as at the newly opened Northwest London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (EOC). The successful candidate is expected to be fellowship trained in upper limb surgery, alongside maintaining competence in general trauma.

The role entails a strong upper limb trauma orientation whilst it still also does include an elective commitment.

It is desirable that the post holder holds a higher clinical degree.

Candidates must demonstrate a clear commitment to service improvement, evidenced through previous audits and completed service development projects.

The successful candidate will be expected to build on established collaborative relationships within a multidisciplinary team.

They will potentially participate in a 1:8 trauma on call rota, including weekend cover, and will contribute to audit, research, management, and ongoing service development.

Daytime trauma responsibilities include leading the trauma list, conducting ward rounds, managing referrals, assessing acute admissions, operating on trauma cases, supporting clinic activity, communicating with relatives, and contributing to teaching.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register OR eligible within 6 months of the date of the Advisory
  • Appointments Committee via CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview, CESR or European Community Rights
  • Upper Limb surgery fellowship
  • Fellowship in complex elbow trauma
  • Good understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council
Clinical Experience
  • Evidence of broad based training, including experience in trauma management with a focus on upper limb injuries, including the management of complex fractures and periprosthetic fractures.
  • Logbook evidence demonstrating experience in the operative management of a wide range of elective and traumatic upper limb conditions.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Solid Understanding of the Clinical Governance Agenda
  • IT proficiency including, email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Evidence of effective audit leading to change
  • Evidence of significant contribution to the Clinical Governance Agenda
  • Advanced IT skills
  • Coaching skills
Research
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
  • Experience of implementing evidence based changes in practice
  • Evidence of recent or ongoing research
  • Evidence of experience in supervising juniors doing research
  • A higher research degree

Teaching and Training
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching and post graduate training
