Job Description

Salary Band: Negotiable according to current consultant salary scale plus London Weighting.

Hours: This is a part time post (6PAs) with a 1 in 9 second on call commitment (2% on call allowance).

The Opportunity

  • We have an exciting opportunity for a 12-monthmaternity cover post at Royal Trinity Hospice, providing both inpatient andcommunity care to a diverse population across central and southwest London.
  • The post will primarily be inpatient focussedbut with support to a bustling community team, including a recently launchedrapid response service.
  • The post holder will be working within a dynamicand supportive team of 4 other consultants to deliver high quality clinicalcare at Englands oldest hospice.
  • The post would suit a newly qualified consultantlooking for a supportive first role, or equally a more seasoned consultantlooking for a new experience. There may also be scope to offer the post as anacting up opportunity for a trainee coming towards the end of their specialtytraining.
Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Excellence:Lead ward rounds and provide senior medical oversight for the Inpatient Unit (IPU), managing complex symptoms and end-of-life care. Royal Trinity Hospice has 26 beds across two wards; typically, one consultant covers each ward.
  • MDT Leadership:Work collaboratively with nurses, AHPs, social work, spiritual care and psychiatric services to develop individualised, person-centred care plans. Chairing the weekly IPU IDT meeting and providing support for complex psychosocial meetings.
  • Community support & Advice:Provide specialist advice to our community nursing and medical teams, local GPs, and hospital partners. Supporting complex case management and palliative care in hard to access groups. Provide senior clinical input for the hospice community IDTs and heart failure IDTs.
  • On-Call:Participate in the consultant on-call rota (typically 1 in 9) providing face to face and remote support for the hospice IPU, and telephone advice only for St Georges, Chelsea & Westminster and Croydon hospitals, as well as The Royal Hospital of Neuro-disability.
  • Education & Governance:The hospice has a range of resident and specialty doctors, giving opportunities for mentorship of junior medical staff and clinical / educational supervision of trainees. Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives will be encouraged.

Job responsibilities
  • Be responsible for the inpatients at Royal Trinity Hospice and supervise the clinical care provided by the non-consultant grade doctors attached to the in patient unit and the community teams in conjunction with the other consultants at Royal Trinity Hospice.
  • Provide clinical leadership for the community palliative care teams working across the catchment area and develop close links with the relevant Primary Care Teams in the area.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for the professional development of Specialist Registrars in Palliative Medicine.
  • Take part in the second on-call rota with the other consultants to enable continuous senior cover for the junior medical staff on-call.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary teaching programmes in Royal Trinity Hospice as well as in the community.
  • Participate and contribute to audit, research and clinical governance activities.
  • Develop and maintain liaison between professional organisations, regionally and nationally.
  • Participate and strengthen the continuing professional development educational programme.
  • Participate in managerial responsibilities as required
  • Contribute to the teaching of medical undergraduates.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MRCP, MRCGP, FRCR or FRCA
  • On or within three months of being on specialist register for Palliative Medicine
  • Higher medical Degree
