Consultant for Haematology (10 PAs)
GOSH is the largest centre for paediatric haematological malignancies in Europe with around 90 new diagnoses per annum. The department is the joint Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) for North London with UCLH. The radiotherapy provision is at UCLH. Currently children aged 13 years and above are seen at UCLH and younger children at GOSH. GOSH provides care for all children
This is a full time, 10 PA substantive consultant, and the post holder will be part of the Haematology department. Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons, to work full time will be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
The post holder will provide a clinical service (with 5.5 other Consultants) to infants and children with malignant haematological conditions (leukaemia, MDS and NHL) as well as those with marrow failure.

Main duties of the jobThe post holder will join a team of seven consultants sharing responsibility for the investigation and management of infants and children with leukaemia, lymphoma, and bone marrow failure.
During attending weeks, two consultants share service leadership:
- Consultant A leads the NHS ward service (Monday Friday, 08 00) and does not undertake clinics during this period.
- Consultant B oversees day care, laboratory reporting, and team clinics (Monday Friday, 08 30) and may provide ward cover if required.
A consultant delivered model of care operates on the NHS ward, with daily consultant led ward rounds. Consultants and associate specialists manage external referrals and queries. All consultants are expected to maintain competence in electronic prescribing and all hands on aspects of clinical care.
The intensive workload of attending weeks (A or B) is balanced by additional non attending time.
The post holder will have eight attending on call weeks per year, during which they will conduct a daily ward round with a middle grade doctor. When not attending, they will hold weekly outpatient clinics. The on call commitment is Medium Frequency Category A (5%). Consultants on call are expected to be present in the hospital between 10:30 and 15:30 each weekend day.

Person Specification- GMC specialist registration with a Licence to Practice (obtained by designated start date)
- MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent
- CCT/CCST in Haematology (or within 6 months at time of interview) or equivalent training and experience (eligible for Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR
- Higher degree - PhD, MD or equivalent
- Formal teaching qualification
- High level written and oral communication skills
- Ability to organise and prioritise own workload
- Ability to work under pressure in a multi disciplinary environment
- Understanding and proven ability to apply research findings in a clinical/organisational context
- Excellent interpersonal and negotiating skills
