Locum Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry

This role is a 12 month fixed term part time consultant position on 4PA, available on Wednesdays and Fridays, within the Royal National ENT & Eastman Dental Hospitals, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The closing date is 03 June 2026.

Applicants must hold full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council and be on the GDC Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work in the Paediatric Dental Department of the Eastman Dental Hospital on Wednesdays and Fridays. Responsibilities include diagnosis, treatment planning, treatment under general anaesthetic and sedation, supervision of trainees and postgraduate students, involvement in multidisciplinary clinics (e.g., hypodontia, orthopaedic paediatrics, anomalies and oral medicine), and participation in remote advice clinics.

The post-holder must demonstrate drive, patient first care, teamwork leadership, and compliance with mandatory Trust training. Strong IT and communication skills are required, along with a commitment to service evolution through education and training.

Person Specification Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)
  • On the UK GDC Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Membership in Paediatric Dentistry, or equivalent
  • Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Paediatric Dentistry (ISFE), or equivalent, before commencing consultant post
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent.
Experience
  • All aspects of paediatric dentistry care with particular emphasis on the management of severe and complex problems.
  • Understanding and management of patients with multidisciplinary problems and ability to coordinate care with other disciplines and health care providers.
  • Experience with a wide range of orthodontic techniques and materials.
  • Experience of innovative treatments. High quality management of patients with advanced needs in Paediatric Dentistry demonstrated by successful outcomes.
  • Successful completion of an SAC approved 3 year minimum training programme in Paediatric Dentistry.
Audit
  • Effective and ongoing participation in audit by demonstration of completed audits.
  • Effective involvement with clinical governance.
  • Experience of audit supervision of others and leading audit programmes.
  • Evidence of innovative service developments, care pathways.
Management
  • A 2 year additional training period post CCST in a SAC approved training programme to gain knowledge and experience of healthcare delivery in secondary care, or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the delivery of healthcare within the NHS.
  • Experience of working with and managing teams and liaising with colleagues.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NHS policies and procedures.
  • Experience of managing, or assisting in the management of, healthcare delivery within the NHS.
  • Evidence of contribution to the management of healthcare delivery at a departmental level.
Research
  • Ability to appraise scientific literature critically.
  • Application of evidence based practice to clinical care.
  • Publications in refereed journals.
  • Research relevant to Paediatric Dentistry.
  • MSc (or equivalent) ltant.
Teaching skill & experience
  • Experience of chairside clinical teaching and training of postgraduates and junior staff.
  • Experience of lectures, presentations and formal teaching to a variety of clinical groups.
  • Commitment to training and CPD.
  • Completion of a teaching or training course.
