Location: Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Boston House - Wigan Health Centre, Town Wigan)

Contract: 6 months (fixed term). Hours: Full time - 10 sessions per week. Salary: £109,725 - £145,478 per year. Closing date: 31/12/:59.

Job overview

The successful candidate will join our busy team providing a Consultant Ophthalmology service for inpatients, day cases and outpatients, with continuing responsibility for the patients, their care and the effective running of the department.

Main duties

• Provide a Consultant Ophthalmology service for day cases and outpatients, with continuing responsibility for the patients, their care and the effective functioning of the department.
• Provide a specialist lacrimal and oculoplastic expertise for the Trust to serve the local population.
• Take part in the Consultant on call rota (1:8).
• Carry out teaching duties as required and take an active part in the education programme of junior medical staff, nurses and AHPs.
• Provide supervision and training to junior hospital doctors.
• Participate in clinical audit, evidence based practice and clinical governance within the department.
• Participate in regional sub speciality audit and clinical governance and actively in continuing professional development (CPD).

Person specification Qualifications

• MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
• FRCOphth or equivalent
• Full registration with GMC
• Specialty specific exams
• MD/MS

Additional

• Motivated and ambitious
• Evidence of commitment to team building
• Understanding of clinical governance and quality issues

Experience

• Glaucoma Fellowship or equivalent experience
• Proven clinical experience in ophthalmology, with a broad experience of the specialty
• Ability to carry out high volume cataract surgery
• Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively
• Able to plan and develop the service
• Experience of working in and leading a multidisciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives

Skills

• Ability to communicate clearly with clinical colleagues, laboratory staff, and other staff and agencies
• Experience in teaching junior medical staff
• Commitment to continuing professional development
