Locum Consultant in Microbiology

This post offers a unique opportunity to join an innovative infection department as a locum consultant on a full time basis (10 PAs). The position is fixed term, 7 months, with the possibility of part time or pro rata on call commitments. Applicants should hold a CCT in Microbiology or a joint CCT in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, or possess equivalent qualifications.
ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will contribute to a 24 hour Clinical Infection Service, supporting complex cases across the Mid Yorkshire Regional Adult Burns Centre, Regional Children's Burns Unit and Yorkshire Regional Spinal Injuries Centre. Key duties include:
- Provision of clinical advice within the Trust, primary care and regional healthcare colleagues
- Authorisation and interpretation of laboratory results
- Liaison with the laboratory and pharmacy teams, and with regional infection specialists
- Infection prevention and control advice, with opportunities to assume Trust infection control roles (e.g., DIPC)
- Collaboration with the local UKHSA team for notifiable diseases and participation in mandatory surveillance
- Attendance at multidisciplinary meetings (haematology, orthopaedics, infection control, regional burns centre, intensive care)
- Development of services such as outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT), undergraduate teaching and research
- Shared on call duties on a 1 in 4 rota
- Participation in clinical governance, audit and quality of care assessment and improvement
- Full registration with the GMC (or eligibility to register within six months of interview)
- UK trained applicants must hold or be within 6 months of award of a CCT in Microbiology or be in a joint CCT in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology; non UK trained applicants must demonstrate equivalence to the UK CCT
- Medical degree (e.g., MBBS) from a recognised medical school
- Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists in infection speciality (or equivalent)
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Broad experience working in a microbiology department
- Ability to develop the Trust's services and contribute to clinical academic activity
- Excellent time management and communication skills
- Evidence of caring, compassionate approach and willingness to comply with Trust systems and policies
- Physical ability to perform the job duties
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance
