Job overview

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, passionate, innovative and progressive Consultant who share our vision, to join our Acute Medical Consultant team in the Midland Metropolitan Univerity Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The Acute Medicine department is a popular site for Acute Medical trainees and is a national centre for POCUS training and accreditation. We have a dedicated AMU Clinical Skills Lab where trainees receive training in POCUS, leadership, and are involved heavily in teaching and education. Feedback from the our trainees is this team provides one of the best training within the Trust. This has been credited to the teamwork "family" ethos that has been created and sustained. The department has been recognised with local, national and international awards/recognition of work, services and innovation including our Epicentre work by HSJ and the Parliamentary Awards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The main duties are as follows:

  1. To collaborate and work to maintain Acute Medicine services in line with strategic requirements.
  2. To provide, with other Consultants in the specialty, routine and emergency Acute Medical services to the Trust, operating a system of mutual out-of-hours cover, and cover for leave.
  3. To provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trust.
  4. To develop a special interest to complement those of the existing Consultants in Acute Medicine and in accordance with the priorities of the Trust.
  5. To develop appropriate services required to fulfil clinical needs, within available resources.
  6. To take responsibility for the educational supervision, education, training and appraisal of resident doctors (of all grades including registrars), medical students and other AHPs.
  7. To participate in clinical meetings and postgraduate activities in the Trust.
  8. To participate in research in accordance with priorities agreed within the Clinical Groups and the Trust within available resources.
Person specification Qualifications
  • Entry on the Specialist Register in Acute Internal Medicine and/or General Internal Medicine (or CCT expected within 6 months from the date of interview)
Clinical Experience
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Acute Medicine
  • Special interest that complements the existing consultants
Management and Administrative Experience
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
Clinical Effectiveness
  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
Teaching and Training experience
  • Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines.
  • Formal training in teaching
Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to management of flow of patients
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research
Other Requirements
  • Full GMC Registration with Licence to Practise.
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to management of flow of patients

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
