Locum Consultant Cardiologist

We are looking for an enthusiastic Cardiology Consultant locum to join our team at The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust and principally support the Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC). The successful candidate will provide high-quality clinical care, contribute to service development, and educate and train resident staff.

Main duties of the job

This consultant cardiology role involves delivering a comprehensive, high-quality cardiology service across inpatient and outpatient settings. The post holder will take shared responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of cardiological conditions, including consultant of the week inpatient cover, outpatient clinics across multiple sites, and provision of advice and guidance to local GPs. The role also includes developing a subspecialty interest (e.g., advanced imaging or cardiac devices), undertaking diagnostic coronary angiography, and contributing to modern cardiology pathways, including Community Diagnostic Centres, MDTs, and advanced practice support.

Active participation in clinical governance, audit, MDTs with cardiothoracic surgery, and mortality and morbidity meetings is expected. The post holder will also contribute to teaching, training, supervision of junior staff, and undergraduate and postgraduate education, alongside involvement in CPD and clinical governance activities. The role carries professional, managerial, and data governance responsibilities, with a strong emphasis on patient safety, communication, equality, confidentiality, and maintaining the highest clinical and professional standards within the Trust.

Job responsibilities Main duties and responsibilities
  • Provision of a cardiology service in collaboration with consultant colleagues, responsible for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and overall functioning of the Department.
  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients with cardiological illnesses.
  • Day to day management of outpatients at PAH and outlying clinics at SMH and HEH.
  • Safe and high quality inpatient cover through the role of 'Consultant of the week'.
  • Advice and guidance to local GPs through a formal online communication platform.
  • Development of a specific sub specialty interest within Cardiology, e.g., advanced imaging or devices, and support for the CDC and aligned diagnostic pathways, including ANPs, clinics and MDTs.
  • Diagnostic coronary angiography skills in the Cardiac Angiography Suite.
  • Active participation in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and Audit.
  • Participation in the Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings with cardio thoracic surgeons from the Essex CTC.
  • Active engagement with the monthly Mortality and Morbidity meeting.
General responsibilities

  • Professional supervision, management, teaching and training of junior staff.
  • Teaching, examination, accreditation duties and contribution to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education locally and nationally.
  • Participation in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and CPD.
  • Managerial (including budgetary) responsibilities where appropriate.
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
  • Adherence to the Trust's Equal Opportunities Policy.
  • Maintenance of a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
  • Carrying out duties to the highest possible standard and in accordance with current quality and performance initiatives.
  • Respect for confidentiality and compliance with GDPR.
  • Compliance with Freedom of Information Act 2000 in line with Trust Policy.
  • Any other duties, such as cover for colleagues' annual leave or authorised absences.
Qualifications
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • CCT (or equivalent) in the relevant specialty or within 6 months of achieving.
  • Sub specialty training aligned with service needs.
  • Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD) or additional postgraduate qualifications.
  • Formal teaching qualification (e.g., PGCert in Medical Education).
Experience
  • Broad and relevant clinical experience in the specialty.
  • Experience in teaching and supervising resident doctors and medical students.
  • Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement.
  • Experience in service development or redesign.
  • Experience in curriculum development or educational leadership.
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals; involvement in clinical research or trials.
  • Previous experience working in the NHS or similar healthcare system.
