About the Role

Hitachi Energy UK Limited is recruiting a qualified legal counsel to strengthen our legal team by providing advice to the HVDC and Grid Power Quality Solutions & Services (GPQSS) business in the UK and Ireland. The role involves ensuring all contractual activities comply with Group directives, local statutes, and supporting high-value complex tenders and projects, including HVDC interconnectors, offshore wind projects, and substations. The successful candidate will contribute to Hitachi Energy's mission of accelerating the energy transition and advancing a sustainable energy future for all. The role may require domestic and overseas travel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert legal advice on a broad range of issues affecting the HVDC & GPQSS business, particularly for tenders and projects within the portfolio of complex power infrastructure projects.
  • Identify concerns and adverse contractual risks at the tendering stage and develop legal strategies, mitigation actions, and practical solutions in support of business activities.
  • Contribute to the review of RFQs, PQQs, tender preparation, risk identification, negotiations of contracts, framework agreements, partnerships, and settlements.
  • Lead and present the legal review for risk reviews, engaging all internal stakeholders.
  • Support contract managers and project teams during project execution in relation to claims with customers and subcontractors.
  • Promote dispute avoidance, manage disputes and liaise with external law firms when necessary.
  • Ensure excellent corporate governance, support implementation of the Code of Ethics and Business Conduct, and assist with investigations of integrity-related issues.
  • Manage and liaise with external service providers, including external legal counsel.
  • Provide ad hoc legal advice to the business.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Law degree and qualified as a lawyer in England & Wales.
  • Minimum 5+ years PQE with experience in grid systems or major utilities construction/engineering projects in the UK and Europe.
  • Track record of handling complex international corporate and commercial transactions.
  • Experience in contract law, drafting, administration, and negotiation of agreements.
  • Strong knowledge of FIDIC, NEC3/NEC4, MF/1 and engineering/construction contracting practices.
  • Demonstrable negotiating skills and drafting expertise for a wide range of contractual and settlement agreements.
  • Ability to work independently, business mindset, solution oriented, and strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capability to influence at all levels and interface with customers during significant negotiations.
