Job Description

We are seeking a curious, collaborative, and dynamic Legal mind to join Checkatrade's in-house legal team during an exciting phase of growth and innovation. We're more interested in your mindset, approach, and ability to make an impact than a rigid skillset. This is a role for someone eager to get stuck in, ask smart questions, challenge assumptions, and play a big role in helping shape the legal foundations.

This is not your average legal job. You'll be embedded within fast-moving cross-functional teams (especially product and tech), and expected to navigate ambiguity, move at speed, and help others do the same. You'll also play a key part in mentoring more junior team members, and role-modelling a proactive, positive and people-first legal culture across Checkatrade.

What You'll Bring:

Your Mindset:

  • A can-do attitude, excited by new problems - even those outside your comfort zone.

  • Naturally curious, able to ask insightful questions and explore new legal and commercial concepts with enthusiasm.

  • Resilient and adaptable, thriving in ambiguity and fast-paced environments.

  • Strong collaboration and mentoring instincts - you enjoy helping others develop and grow.

  • A genuine team player, who builds trusted relationships across the business and brings others along for the journey.

  • A mindset geared towards technology and innovation, especially AI and legal tech.

Legal Experience

We're open on depth vs breadth, but ideally you'll be comfortable with:

  • Drafting and advising on consumer-facing terms, product terms & conditions, and contractual frameworks (e.g., service agreements, partnerships, suppliers).

  • Reviewing a wide range of commercial contracts with a strategic lens.

  • Advising on marketing and advertising compliance.

  • Being the legal partner to product and technology teams, ideally including experience in AI or platform marketplace based services.

  • Providing pragmatic, business-friendly advice, not just legal risk assessments.

  • Advising on regulatory compliance, particularly as it relates to consumer rights, online platforms, and digital services.

  • Taking ownership of litigation management, coordinating with external counsel and internal stakeholders as needed.

  • Experience using or implementing legal tech solutions (e.g. AI-driven review platforms, workflow automation) to improve efficiency and delivery of legal services.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with and advise C-suite and senior leadership, building trust and influencing at the highest levels of the business.

Role Requirements:

  • Qualified solicitor

  • 4-6 years PQE (broadly flexible), with in-house experience.

  • Proven ability to work independently, prioritise workload, and deliver under pressure.

  • Experience or enthusiasm for mentoring and supporting junior team members.

  • Awareness of the regulatory and commercial context in which marketplace platforms operate.

What's in It for You?

  • A dynamic, collaborative legal team that values growth and inclusion.

  • A front-row seat in a fast-paced, product-led company.

  • Hybrid working with a central London HQ.

  • A chance to shape your own role and grow into a more senior position over time.

We are an equal opportunities employer that is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
