Legal Cashier

Our client is a well-established international law firm with a strong reputation for excellence and a busy finance function that operates at pace. They are seeking an experienced Legal Cashier to join their collaborative, high-performing London team, where compliance, accuracy and strong internal relationships are central to success.

Reporting to the Head Cashier, you will take ownership of a broad cashiering remit spanning day-to-day transactional processing, residual balance management and regulatory compliance. This is a permanent, full-time role, working 9:30am to 5:30pm with some flexibility required, and offering hybrid working with a minimum of two days per week in the London office.

What You'll Be Doing

• Monitoring and managing regulatory risk relating to client money, and escalating concerns to the appropriate stakeholders where needed
• Processing client and office account payments across a range of methods, including CHAPS, BACS and international transfers
• Supporting the firm's approach to minimising residual client balance exposure and associated regulatory risk
• Carrying out daily and monthly bank reconciliations across client and office accounts with a high degree of accuracy
• Accurately posting transactions within the firm's Practice Management System in a timely manner
• Working proactively with matter teams and fee earners to investigate and resolve residual client balances in line with SRA requirements
• Allocating incoming receipts to the correct client and office accounts, ensuring funds are promptly communicated and processed
• Maintaining thorough audit trails, approvals, and supporting documentation for all client balance activity
• Handling suspense account entries, investigating items and clearing them efficiently
• Acting as a point of contact for fee earners regarding incoming funds and payment queries, resolving issues with minimal disruption
• Promoting best practice and a compliance-first mindset across the cashiering team
• Supporting both internal and external audit processes as required
• Managing out-of-date cheques, including cancellation and reissuance where appropriate
• Always upholding strong financial governance standards and internal controls

What We're Looking For

• Solid previous experience working as a Legal Cashier within a law firm environment
• Thorough working knowledge of the SRA Accounts Rules and their practical application
• Proven experience handling both client and office account transactions
• Hands-on exposure to client money management, bank reconciliations, and compliance procedures
• Strong attention to detail with a consistent track record of accuracy
• The ability to prioritise effectively and manage a high-volume workload under pressure
• Confident interpersonal skills, with the ability to build credible working relationships with fee earners, finance colleagues, and partners
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word at an advanced level

Desirable Experience

• Experience working with a legal Practice Management System (PMS), particularly those used within large or international law firms
• Prior exposure to residual balance management or SRA audit preparation
• A proactive, team-orientated approach with a keen interest in process improvement
