School of Engineering and Built Environment

TheSchool of Engineering and Built Environmentat the University of Derby is a dynamic and future-focused academic community that blends technical excellence with creative innovation. It offers a wide range of programmes across electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, motorsport engineering and entertainment engineering and built environment, preparing students to tackle global challenges in Artificial intelligence, robotics, sustainability and net zero.

The School is home to research-active academics who bring real world experience and academic rigour to the classroom, supporting students in developing both creative portfolios and technical competencies.

The discipline area is located in the University's STEM annex in Markeaton Street, where staff offices and lab facilities are co located. Key investments in the last few years include dedicated intelligent instrumentation and smart sensor technologies, robotics, renewable energy, power engineering and advanced materials and manufacturing. The discipline area is actively engaged in knowledge exchange projects and has an active applied research agenda.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable individual to join our team as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the continued success and development of our Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) provision, while supporting the wider Engineering discipline within the College of Science and Engineering.

The successful candidate will need to integrate into existing team and contribute to the School's teaching, research and innovation activities. You will need to produce high quality research outputs, to develop collaborative research initiatives, and to secure external fundings, and deliver high-quality teaching in EEE related modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

A distinctive feature of this role is the opportunity to contribute to the University's growing portfolio of transnational education (TNE) partnerships. As part of our flying faculty model, you will be required to deliver programmes at international partner institutions. This will involve overseas travel, including periods of up to six weeks per visit and multiple trips throughout the academic year, to fulfil teaching and academic support commitments. The timing and frequency of travel will vary according to operational requirements. In addition to teaching overseas, you will have the opportunity to develop international academic and research collaborations and to enhance the University's global engagement and reputation. Initially this will be to support a partner institution in China. Between international assignments, you will be based at our Markeaton Street campus, playing a full academic role in teaching, research, academic administration, and the wider life of the School.

This role would suit an enthusiastic and innovative academic with a good honours degree in a relevant discipline and subject-specific expertise in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and/or Robotics. Applicants should hold Fellowship of Advance HE (HEA), or be willing to work towards this, together with a PhD (or submitted and awaiting examination) in a relevant area, or equivalent academic or professional standing achieved through publication, professional practice or industry achievement.

You will have experience of teaching and supporting learning in higher education, with the ability to utilise a variety of engaging and inclusive teaching approaches that inspire students and enhance their learning experience. The successful candidate will be committed to delivering an inclusive, globally connected curriculum and able to adapt their teaching to meet the needs of students from a range of educational backgrounds, including those whose first language is not English.

For Senior Lecturer applicants, we are seeking evidence of academic leadership in teaching and learning, including an understanding of the higher education regulatory environment and experience of leading curriculum development or enhancement activities. You will demonstrate how your professional, industrial or external engagement activities inform and enrich your teaching, research and wider academic practice. Significant professional or industrial recognition and measurable impact within your field is essential, alongside a strong research profile.

• Effectively teach and facilitate learning on a range of subjects / modules within the subject area on undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and post-experience programmes.
• Ensure that knowledge from research and scholarly activities informs and enhances learning and teaching, as well as extending it to appropriate external activities such as knowledge transfer activities.
• Ensure that module / programme design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the University.
• Participate effectively in the assessment process, including the setting, marking and moderation of student work, providing constructive feedback and ensuring it is in accordance with quality assurance procedures.
• Participate in the continuing review and development of module/programme delivery, incorporating innovative study modes, learning environments and pedagogic practices to engage and stimulate students, deliver effective learning outcomes and develop the skills and attributes of the 'Derby Graduate'.
• Take on relevant module leader and/or programme leader responsibilities, including associated marketing, recruitment, delivery and ongoing programme development activities.
• Contribute to development of new programme and preparation of the validation and/or accreditation preparations.
• Deliver the teaching at overseas partner universities to satisfactory standards from both sides.

Research / Scholarship

• Engage in individual research and collaborate both internally and externally on research projects that are consistent with the College, and contribute to influencing leading edge practice in the University and contribution to the REF.
• Sustain and enhance the reputation of the University by publishing in appropriate quality journals and presenting at scholarly activities such as workshops, conferences and other similar events.
• Develop and maintain contacts and relationship with relevant professional, research and industrial organisations.
• Contribute to writing bids for externally funded research projects.

Other

• Act as a personal tutor, supporting and mentoring students as appropriate.
• Provide pastoral care to students, following and referring any students in risk when necessary to services that provide further support.
• Support marketing and student recruitment activities as required.
