Job Description

The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS) is part of the Education and Lifelong Learning Directorate. EMTAS supports learners that have English/Welsh as an additional language, Minority Ethnic learners and Gypsy Traveller learners.

About the job

The Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service is looking for an experienced, dynamic and resourceful, Learning Mentor to join the team. The Learning Mentor will work under the direct instruction of the Achievement Lead/Closing the Gap Officers/EMTAS teachers, to support access to learning for pupils and to improve engagement, achievement and attendance. The role focuses on supporting and mentoring learners in a variety of settings including schools, bespoke provision and vocational courses. The Learning Mentor will help develop a range of activities aimed at encouraging and supporting young people. They will liaise with parents, teachers and other agencies as required with a view to improving attendance and behaviour and raising achievement.

What we are looking for from you

We are seeking an experienced Learning Mentor to establish good relationships with pupils, act as a role model, and be aware of and respond appropriately to individual needs. You will work well as part of a team within a school or bespoke setting, provide appropriate learning opportunities and implement agreed work programmes/practical lessons for learners. You will have the skills to select and prepare resources necessary to lead learning activities, that consider pupils' interests, language and cultural backgrounds. You will encourage pupils to interact and work cooperatively with others and engage all pupils in activities. This may be within a school or vocational setting, or with learners that are reluctant to access and engage with mainstream provision.

Responsibilities and Requirements

The Learning Mentor will:

  • Support and mentor learners across schools, bespoke provision and vocational courses.
  • Develop activities encouraging and supporting young people.
  • Collaborate with parents, teachers and agencies to improve attendance, behaviour and achievement.
  • Select and prepare culturally appropriate learning resources.
  • Provide learning opportunities and implement work programmes.
Employment conditions

Part time 37 hours per week, 39 weeks per year. Temporary until 31st March 2027. Contract is subject to funding review and renewed upon approval. The role requires registration with the Education Workforce Council (EWC) and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
