As Lead Statutory and Tax Accountant within Sanofi Business Operations. This role requires excellent accounting knowledge and the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders effectively. In this position you will be the key contact and adviser to the business on (complex) local, regional and global VAT matters. You will work closely with and supports the sub-process teams, Tax, Treasury and Controllers and other departmental colleagues during month closing.

Main responsibilitiesGeneral
Monitors and verifies the accurate registration of financial transactions, including general ledger (GL) and sub-ledger (sub-GL) administration.
Posts journal entries and ensures proper coding and classification of transactions.
Performs balance sheet reconciliations, investigates variances, and ensures accuracy and completeness of financial data.
Acts as a key user of the statutory reporting tool, supporting process improvements and ensuring compliance with reporting standards.
Prepares and contributes input for the Annual Financial Statements in accordance with local statutory and corporate requirements.
Analyzes account data and recommends corrective actions or process improvements based on findings.
Resolves financial discrepancies by collecting, investigating, and analyzing accounting information.
Responsible for executing assigned month-end closing activities, ensuring timely and accurate completion of tasks.
Supports the broader team in monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting and reconciliation activities.
Taxation
Ensures full compliance with tax legislation and other statutory obligations, including the accurate and timely preparation and submission of VAT returns for the assigned region or country.
Serves as the primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders on a wide range of tax-related matters.
Acts as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to the business on VAT issues at the local, regional, and global levels, providing guidance on complex transactions and regulatory developments.
Oversees the preparation and filing of tax returns, including VAT and corporate income tax, in collaboration with relevant teams and external advisors.
Statutory
Preparation of financial statements in accordance with local statutory requirements for the assigned region/country.
Coordination of external audit processes, including timely response to auditor requests and ensuring the availability of accurate supporting documentation.
Acting as a point of contact and liaising with key stakeholders, including finance, tax, legal, and external partners, to ensure alignment and timely information flow.
Preparation and submission of statutory and statistical reports to local authorities in compliance with regulatory deadlines.
Internal control & compliance
Maintains and enforces internal accounting controls to ensure that financial transactions, records, and statements are accurate, complete, and compliant with applicable internal policies and external regulations.
Conducts self-assessments and testing activities to monitor adherence to key controls and ensure compliance with internal audit standards and regulatory requirements.
Proactively identifies control gaps and supports remediation efforts to strengthen the financial control environment.
Projects & Support
Actively participates in ad hoc projects, process changes, and continuous improvement initiatives, contributing financial expertise and ensuring accounting accuracy.
Takes ownership of resolving accounting-related issues, providing guidance and technical support where needed.
Supports colleagues in managing complex or non-standard transactions and escalations.
Delivers training to new team members, ensuring effective onboarding and knowledge transfer.
Coaches and may supervise junior colleagues, promoting knowledge sharing and professional development within the team.
About you
Education
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a similar subject.
Experience
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a multinational corporate environment, ideally within a high-performance, quality-driven organization.
Strong expertise in accounting principles and practices, with a solid understanding of financial operations, structures, and compliance requirements.
In-depth knowledge of IFRS, SOX, and internal control frameworks.
Advanced proficiency in SAP and Microsoft Excel, with the ability to manage and analyze large volumes of financial data efficiently.
Demonstrated ability to thrive in complex, fast-paced environments, working across cross-functional teams and regions.
Soft and technical skills
Experienced SAP user with strong proficiency in navigating and utilizing the system effectively.
Experience with Thomson Reuters OneSource statutory reporting tool is a strong advantage.
Excellent analytical skills and keen attention to detail, with the ability to maintain a high-level perspective and understand the bigger picture.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Capable of working independently and collaboratively within a team, with a proactive, pragmatic approach to tackling complex and unfamiliar tasks.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, combined with the ability to build effective working relationships across functions and levels.
Fluency in English (both written and spoken) is required; additional language skills are a plus.
