Lead Occupational Health Nurse

To provide clinical leadership within the Occupational Health (OH) team, taking professional responsibility for all clinical matters and ensuring the delivery of high-quality care in line with Eurotunnel standards. This includes conducting medical assessments, supporting staff with health conditions, maintaining accurate and confidential records, and leading on clinical governance, mentoring, and training.
The Occupational Health Department plays a vital role in ensuring employees are fit for work through pre-employment and management referral medicals, delivered in accordance with established clinical standards. It also promotes staff wellbeing through expert advice and targeted health campaigns.
As Lead Nurse, you will be central to both clinical care and team leadership, acting as the primary contact for clinical and safeguarding concerns. The role balances hands-on clinical responsibilities with strategic oversight and supports both the OH and Wellbeing Operations Manager and the in-house Occupational Health Physician in delivering a proactive, high-quality health service.
Conduct a range of clinical assessments including routine periodic medicals, management referrals, health surveillance, site visits, workplace health risk assessments, and pre-employment medicals with drug and alcohol testing
Act as Clinical Lead for the Occupational Health team, working in partnership with the in-house Occupational Health Physician to manage complex cases and oversee clinical triage
Lead all clinical aspects of the Occupational Health service, ensuring safe, high-quality, and person-centred care through expert oversight and continuous guidance
Play a key role in delivering strategic health priorities, including physical and psychological health, screening, surveillance, and vaccination programmes
Coordinate daily operations of the Occupational Health department in collaboration with the OH & Wellbeing Operations Manager
Lead on clinical governance and risk management, including responsibility for IT systems and service improvement initiatives such as the selection and implementation of new OH software
Maintain accurate, confidential health records within the OH system and issue relevant certificates and reports to employees and management
Conduct regular clinical audits and reviews, supporting and promoting internal policies and procedures
Deliver structured mentorship, targeted training, and professional supervision to foster best clinical practices and support SEQOHS accreditation
Provide guidance and referrals to specialist support services, including counsellors, physiotherapists, and consultants
Contribute to the design and delivery of health and wellbeing initiatives and events
Organise and host professional site visits, including occasional night-time visits during maintenance work, and facilitate exchange visits with French OH colleagues.
Qualifications and Experience
Registered Nurse with valid NMC (SCPHN) registration
Postgraduate qualification in Occupational Health Nursing (degree or diploma) preferred
Minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar environment, ideally within Occupational Health
Strong leadership and mentoring experience, including team supervision and performance management
Knowledge of occupational health and employment legislation and best practices
Experience with pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, preferably in the railway or transport sectors
Skilled in using and developing Occupational Health software systems
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Teams)
Solid understanding of safeguarding, clinical governance, medical confidentiality, and GDPR
Knowledge of UK Health & Safety law
Experience in developing and delivering health campaigns
Trained to administer vaccinations
Ability to analyse OH system data and produce management reports (e.g., statistics, trends)
Strong interpersonal and influencing skills; able to build effective relationships at all levels
Empathetic, collaborative, and committed to improving patient satisfaction and experience
Confident working independently with a proactive and resilient approach
Qualified First Aider (beneficial but not essential)
High-level verbal and written communication skills
Basic understanding of spoken and written French is an advantage.

Full-time role based on the Eurotunnel site, with limited ad-hoc home working possible
Working hours: Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend availability required

Presents a professional image, representing the Occupational Health department positively.
