Lead Nurse for Paediatric Critical Care

This is an extraordinarily exciting time at St Peters Hospital as we develop our Level 2 Critical Care Facility within our CYP areas across the Organisation.

We seek an experienced Registered Paediatric Nurse with outstanding skills, knowledge, and a passion for excellence to lead our Level 2 Critical Care initiatives. You will help develop our MDT, environment, infrastructure, and IT systems to ensure children and young people requiring Level 1 and 2 Critical Care receive outstanding care and patient experience.

Main duties of the job
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team to develop, implement, and evaluate care programmes.
  • Assist in establishing Level 2 Critical Care, including training and competencies for staff and healthcare assistants.
  • Promote inter-professional learning and serve as a role model for best practice nursing.

Support patient flow across ICS and Critical Care pathways, facilitate discharge planning, and support community admission avoidance. Ensure data collection is reliable and complete.

Job responsibilities

Clinical/professional Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical leadership for holistic paediatric Critical Care, based on evidence and research.
  • Act as a positive role model and resource within the paediatric unit.
  • Develop standards of care for Level 2 PCC and collaborate with the resuscitation team.
  • Ensure high standards of documentation and practice, develop protocols, and promote continuous service development.
  • Lead in developing and reviewing competency frameworks, ensure clinical governance, and support practice changes.

Communication and Engagement

  • Communicate effectively with children, families, and multidisciplinary teams, providing education and expert advice.
  • Lead discharge planning, coordinate case conferences, and liaise with community and social services to facilitate early discharges.

Managerial and Leadership Responsibilities

  • Assist in establishing Level 2 critical care, including staff training and appraisals.
  • Support practice development, policy implementation, and operational management.
  • Lead audits, risk assessments, and staff development initiatives.

Education and Development

  • Create a supportive learning environment, assess staff needs, and facilitate training programs.
  • Support MDT skills development and promote innovative practice and simulation training.

Clinical Governance

  • Participate in quality and risk management initiatives, including incident reporting and compliance monitoring.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Registered Children's Nurse (RSCN/NMC)
  • Level 2 Children's Critical Care Course
  • APLS, EPALS/PILS, PGCE
Experience
  • Band 6 experience in Critical Care L2/3
  • Leadership in projects and audits, presentation experience, data collection
Knowledge
  • Trust's vision and strategic objectives, evidence-based practice
Skills
  • Leadership, diversity awareness, IT proficiency, analytical skills, communication skills
