Job Description
Lead Nurse - Palliative and End of Life Care (XR09)

We are seeking an inspirational individual to provide Trust-wide leadership for palliative and end of life care. The role will lead the strategic development of end-of-life care services across the Trust and drive partnership working with patient and public involvement groups, Higher Education Institutes and the voluntary sector, in line with the Leeds Palliative Care Network End of Life Care Strategy.

Job responsibilities

Senior leadership post to support the delivery of high-quality palliative and end-of-life care for patients and families in line with NICE guidance, the Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care and local Service Specification.

Lead the Trust-wide development of palliative and end-of-life care services, working closely with senior nursing leadership to ensure a strategic coordinated approach.

Partner with the wider health community, including patient and public involvement organisations and the voluntary sector, to deliver priorities of the Leeds Palliative Care Network End of Life Care Strategy.

Provide professional leadership and line management for the Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist team ( 20 WTE), including recruitment, performance management, workforce planning, appraisals and delegated budget responsibility.

Represent the Trust on local, regional and national committees relating to palliative and end-of-life care. Act on behalf of the Trust to lead CQC inspection preparation and assurance reporting.

Use expert knowledge and evidence-based practice to continually improve patient outcomes, conduct root cause analysis on incidents and complaints, and share learning about palliative and end-of-life care.

Lead changes in guidance, education and care delivery based on audits, complaints and local intelligence to ensure high-quality care for dying patients and families.

Set and monitor standards of care for the dying patient and present regular reports on service development to the organisation.

Deliver training and professional advice on end-of-life care to the nursing and allied health workforce and senior leadership teams.

Work collaboratively with the Chief Nurse team, Matrons and Clinical Educators to embed service improvement and workforce development within the palliative care workforce.

Support CSUs and MDTs with clinical governance, risk management, and performance review processes to meet national standards and financial targets.

Lead the development of patient/public involvement strategies and patient information strategies for palliative and end-of-life care services, ensuring evaluation of their impact.

Ensure the adoption of new and emerging CQC and NICE guidance by all MDT and CSU staff, maintaining best practice across care pathways.

Represent the Trust at Leeds Palliative Care Network Group Yorkshire and other relevant cancer care groups.

Promote and use the Leeds Improvement Method to enhance quality and safety and collaborate with Research and Innovation to support evidence-based practice.

Fulfil statutory duties for safeguarding and whistleblowing, maintain registration and participate in mandatory training and professional development.

Person Specification Additional Requirements
  • Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for post
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (Adult)
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development over last 3 years
  • Experience in performance management
  • Relevant oncology registration qualification or equivalent experience
  • Project management experience
Experience
  • Minimum band 7 experience including palliative and end-of-life care
  • Experience managing staff and budgetary responsibilities
  • Experience in large-scale service development and change management
  • Experience teaching multi-disciplinary staff
  • Audit participation and promotion of evidence-based practice
  • Understanding of social, political and historical factors influencing local and national health services
