Job Description

At Passenger, we build technology for good, and we are seeking a like-minded Lead Mobile Engineer who is looking to deliver a positive impact on the world around us.

In this role, you will be crucial in the delivery of robust, high-quality mobile applications for both Android and iOS that power and inform responsible and sustainable mobility choices for both our bus operators and their passengers.

You will lead existing talented engineers who are seeking a colleague with professional dexterity, a can-do attitude, and demonstrable leadership ability.

About you

We're looking for someone ready to jump in and lead. You've spent at least 5 years in a Senior or Lead engineering role, ideally within a medium-sized business where scale and agility were critical.

You possess deep mobile expertise, specialising in either native iOS/Swift or Android/Kotlin with an interest in the other as well as cross platform technologies. You see architecture as a foundational skill, with expert knowledge of modern mobile standards and strategic refactoring. You're a natural leader who elevates quality across the team, demonstrated by your ability to set high standards, conduct thorough code reviews, and employ advanced debugging techniques.

You're a great communicator and mediator, skilled at managing stakeholders and collaborating closely with Product and Design teams. Crucially, you are an Accessibility Champion with a commitment to building inclusive user interfaces. Finally, your interest lies in the sustainable transport domain, and you want to apply your engineering excellence to products that connect people in their communities.

Key responsibilities

You will serve as the technical backbone for our mobile initiatives, leading the team by providing coaching and mentoring to promote knowledge sharing and guiding the ways of working. You'll act as the expert voice, advising on new technology, setting the programming standards, and maintaining technical responsibility for every stage of the software lifecycle.

You are the ultimate owner of quality and delivery. You will define and implement advanced functional and non-functional testing strategies specific to the mobile environment, and you will own the end-to-end app store submission and release management process. You will ensure the creation of features across the portfolio, effective management of technical debt, and the delivery of robust, secure solutions.

Finally, your role is pivotal in managing internal and external relationships. You will mediate discussions and manage expectations across all stakeholders, while also contributing to service stability by resolving complex service faults and joining the Out of Hours support rotation.

Location

We're looking for someone to join our team in a remote role. We value in-person connections and require you to attend our office at least four times a year for team collaboration and company events.

If you live within a 35-mile radius of our office, you're welcome to work from there as often as you like, five days a week. This offers you the best of both worlds: the flexibility of remote work with the option to connect in person whenever it suits you.

What we offer:
  • Starting annual salary of up to £75,000, depending on experience

  • Flexible working hours

  • The opportunity to work in technology for good and to help build a future where sustainable, shared transport comes first.

  • The opportunity to work remotely and/or join us at our friendly HQ in Bournemouth with fantastic facilities, including showers, bike storage, snacks and refreshments.

  • Company-sponsored quarterly get-togethers.

  • Colleagues and managers who support you to be the best you can be with quarterly reviews, structured CPD and a dedicated training budget to help you grow as a person and progress within the company.

  • Private medical health care, with medical history disregarded for yourself & your family.

  • Health Cash Plan to cover the costs of day-to-day healthcare and well-being support.

  • Two paid charity days per year

  • Cycle to work scheme.

  • Electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme.

  • Employee referral scheme.

  • Length of service recognition benefits (additional annual leave and pension contributions
