£60,000 - £70,000 + 10% Bonus
We are looking for an experienced Lead Engineer to join a specialist engineering and manufacturing business working on complex, bespoke machinery and equipment. This is a varied, customer-facing role for someone with a strong mechanical engineering background who enjoys being involved in the full engineering process.
Lead Engineer Roles and Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical direction and mechanical design of complex machinery, mechanisms, special purpose machinery and bespoke equipment
- Produce, check and approve robust mechanical design solutions in line with client specifications, national standards and regulatory requirements
- Produce and oversee detailed 3D CAD designs and 2D manufacturing drawings, ideally using Autodesk Inventor
- Produce and verify engineering design calculations and check the technical solutions of other engineers
- Review designs and drawings for suitability for manufacture and contribute to manufacturability reviews
- Act as the technical authority and point of escalation for engineering queries, technical problems and design solutions
- Take ownership of allocated engineering projects from initial enquiry/order through to successful completion
- Coordinate engineering documentation and workshop activity in line with project programmes
- Work closely with production to plan and prioritise workshop loading, resources and material availability
- Monitor projects against cost, time and quality targets, identifying and managing risks and variances
- Work directly with customers to understand requirements, discuss technical solutions and provide technical support
- Support the commercial and sales process by providing engineering input into bids, estimates, proposals and project budgets
- Provide day-to-day leadership, direction and mentoring to the engineering team
- Support the technical development and professional growth of other engineers
- Get involved with hands-on mechanical build, assembly, fitting and development of machinery where required
- Work closely with engineering, manufacturing, production and commercial teams across the business
- Attend customer sites, conferences, exhibitions and other industry events when required
- Keep up to date with industry and market developments and identify potential opportunities
- Promote a high-performance, safety-first culture and ensure high standards of health, safety and quality are maintained
- Work to the required regulatory and compliance standards within a highly regulated engineering environment
Lead Engineer Ideal Candidate:
- Degree-level qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a similar discipline, or equivalent industry experience
- Strong and demonstrable mechanical engineering background
- Experience designing complex machinery, mechanisms, special purpose machinery or bespoke engineered products
- Experience leading or taking technical ownership of engineering projects from concept through to completion
- Previous experience providing technical leadership, guidance, mentoring or line management to other engineers
- Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally with Autodesk Inventor, together with experience producing detailed 2D manufacturing drawings
- Good knowledge of GD&T to BS8888:2020
- Experience producing and checking engineering calculations
- Strong understanding of design for manufacture and manufacturability
- Commercially aware, with an understanding of project budgets, costs, resource and workshop planning
- Confident communicating technical information to customers, suppliers and internal teams
- Comfortable working directly with customers and attending customer meetings and sites
- A hands-on approach with the ability to get involved in mechanical assembly, fitting and development when required
- Able to manage multiple projects, priorities and deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Willing to travel within the UK for customer visits, conferences, exhibitions and project meetings
- A proactive, collaborative and practical approach to engineering and problem-solving
