Job Description
University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust - LAS ST3+ Gastroenterology

The closing date is 05 February 2026

The post-holder will work within the Gastroenterology team providing medical cover on a dedicated Gastro/Hepatology ward, in conjunction with another SHO and the consultant who provides cover to the ward. Participation in out-of-hours work and weekend ward rounds is required as part of this post. The post-holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the patients on the ward, the majority of whom have been on another hospital ward prior to transfer to Gastro/Specialised Medicine. The consultant facilitates a morning Board Round with a requirement to work towards prompt discharges, aiming for Home before Lunch.

Main duties of the job
  • Observe the Trust's agreed policies and procedures, particularly regarding staff management, and follow the Trust's Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions.
  • Take responsibility for one's own Health & Safety and comply with safe working arrangements, policies and procedures in place.
  • Comply with all Trust requirements of appraisal, assessment and the proposed medical training programme as stipulated by the programme leads.
  • Compete Trust general and local induction.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • MBBS
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP Part 1/Part 2 written or equivalent examination cleared.
  • Advanced Life Support
  • Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st degree

Clinical Experience

  • Minimum 2-3 years Senior House Officer
  • Officer/CMT or clear demonstration of equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of safe, sound clinical practices.
  • 1 year in a substantive post within the UK or clear demonstration of equivalent experience elsewhere.
  • Experience of teaching medical students.
  • Audit and research in the specialty.

Skills

  • Proven ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise busy workloads effectively and cope under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, senior medical staff and other health professionals.
  • Proficient and efficient handling of medical problems.
  • Evidence of safe sound practical procedures.
