Location: West Thurrock - Navigator Terminals Thames Limited, Oliver Road, West Thurrock, Grays, Essex RM20 3ED

The Laboratory Technician Level 3 Apprentice role supports the quality and technical performance of materials through routine sampling, testing, and analysis of aggregates, sands, raw materials, and bituminous products in line with required frequencies. The role involves monitoring test results and trends to help identify potential issues and support preventative actions, reporting non-conformities and test failures to technical management, and assisting with preliminary complaint investigations. The apprentice also provides technical support to internal teams and customers within set guidelines, maintains accurate laboratory data and records, and ensures the laboratory environment and test equipment are properly maintained and within calibration while working towards a recognised apprenticeship standard.

Summary of duties
  • Ensure sampling and testing of all aggregates, sands, incoming raw materials, bitumen, and bituminous materials at the required frequency.
  • Assist with monitoring analysis and trends from testing of materials and finished products to ensure appropriate preventative action has been taken.
  • Report all instances of product, test rate failure and non-conformities to technical management.
  • Provide technical advice and support to other internal departments and customers as required.
  • Input data and operate the laboratory computer database system.
  • Carry out preliminary complaint investigations.
  • Ensure laboratory environment and test equipment is well maintained and within calibration.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience
  • Detail-oriented, methodical, and produce accurate reliable work.
  • Strong interest in science, materials, and quality assurance with curiosity about product performance.
  • Comfortable following procedures and standards, spotting trends, identifying potential issues and escalating concerns.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team; communicate clearly with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Proficient in computer systems for recording and analysing data; organized, proactive and maintain a clean, safe, calibrated laboratory environment.
  • Motivated to develop technical and professional skills through a recognised apprenticeship.
Qualifications and Experience

They value attitude, curiosity and commitment; previous science experience is helpful but not essential. Applicants can be school or college leavers, or those looking to retrain. Enthusiastic, proactive, ready to learn.

Apprenticeship Details

Over 18 months, minimum of 6 hours of off-the-job training per week (theory and practical). You will be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro and mentor at Jean Lefebvre. You will earn a salary while gaining qualifications.

Eligibility
  • Must be over 18.
  • Not in full-time education.
  • Live in the UK for 3 years and have right to work in the UK.
  • May not be eligible if already hold Level 3, degree or equivalent or substantial experience.

Note: Due to health and safety requirements, you must be 18+ to be eligible for this apprenticeship.
