Software Engineer - Platform Engineering

Dublin

12-month Contract (Strong chance of extension)

Overview

We are seeking a Kubernetes Developer to join our global infrastructure and platform engineering team and help build software-driven automation for Kubernetes-based managed services and SaaS platforms. As a Kubernetes developer, you will work closely with senior software engineers, Kubernetes architects, DevOps, SRE, and security teams to develop reliable, secure, and production-ready platform capabilities that support mission-critical applications.

This role is intended for someone who is growing into Kubernetes-native software development and can contribute directly to Go-based automation, Kubernetes controllers, custom resources, GitOps workflows, and platform tooling. The role combines practical software engineering with hands-on Kubernetes experience and provides an opportunity to help turn repeatable operational processes into maintainable platform software.

Key Responsibilities

Kubernetes Operator and Controller Development

Develop and maintain Kubernetes-native software using Go, including controllers, custom resources, and supporting automation components.

Contribute to the design and implementation of Custom Resource Definitions, reconciliation logic, status reporting, ownership models, and controller behavior.

Build software that helps automate provisioning, configuration, upgrades, scaling, recovery, and operational workflows for managed services and SaaS platforms.

Work with senior engineers to ensure controllers are reliable, observable, secure, idempotent, and resilient to retries, drift, and changing cluster state.

Software Engineering and Testing

Write clear, maintainable Go code using established engineering practices, code review, structured error handling, and consistent package organization.

Develop unit, integration, and cluster-based tests for Kubernetes resources, controller behavior, and platform automation workflows.

Support CI/CD pipelines for building, testing, validating, packaging, and releasing platform software and Kubernetes automation.

Contribute to engineering standards for API design, controller patterns, test strategy, documentation, and release quality.

Kubernetes Platform Integration

Work with Kubernetes environments across public cloud, private cloud, and on-premises platforms to ensure software integrates safely and consistently.

Support integration with Kubernetes networking, ingress, storage, certificates, scheduling, workload security, and cluster life cycle processes.

Contribute to automation involving Helm, Terraform, GitOps workflows, Argo CD, Flux, and related deployment tooling.

Help turn validated platform patterns and operating procedures into reusable software-driven capabilities.

Security, Governance, and Compliance

Implement Kubernetes automation using secure defaults, least-privilege RBAC, secrets handling, workload isolation, and appropriate operational guardrails.

Partner with security and platform teams to support vulnerability remediation, audit requirements, admission controls, and policy-as-code practices where applicable.

Help ensure platform software follows approved patterns for security, reliability, and maintainability.

Observability, Troubleshooting, and Operational Readiness

Build software that is observable and supportable, including useful logs, metrics, events, health checks, and status conditions.

Support troubleshooting of Kubernetes workloads, controller behavior, failed reconciliations, deployment issues, and platform automation failures.

Contribute to dashboards, alerts, runbooks, and documentation that improve operational readiness and supportability.

Participate in incident reviews and help implement corrective actions that improve automation safety and platform reliability.

Collaboration and Support

Partner with senior software engineers, Kubernetes engineers, SREs, security teams, and application developers to implement cloud-native platform capabilities.

Contribute to internal documentation, examples, development guides, and knowledge-sharing sessions.

Serve as a developing technical contributor on Kubernetes-native software, platform automation, and containerization practices.

Experience/Qualifications Required

Three or more years of experience in software engineering, platform engineering, DevOps, infrastructure automation, cloud engineering, or SRE roles.

Hands-on experience developing software in Go, or strong software engineering experience with a demonstrated ability to work in Go.

Practical experience with Kubernetes, containers, Linux, and cloud-native application deployment patterns.

Familiarity with Kubernetes APIs, Custom Resource Definitions, controllers, reconciliation loops, RBAC, status conditions, events, and object life cycle behavior.

experience with CI/CD, Git, code review, automated testing, and modern software delivery practices.

Working knowledge of Helm, GitOps, Terraform, Argo CD, Flux, or equivalent automation tooling.

Understanding of Kubernetes security concepts such as RBAC, secrets, namespaces, network policies, admission controls, and workload isolation.

Ability to troubleshoot Kubernetes workloads, containerized applications, failed deployments, and automation issues.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with senior engineers and cross-functional teams.

Desired Skills

experience with Kubebuilder, Operator SDK, controller-runtime, client-go, or related Kubernetes development frameworks.

experience building or contributing to a Kubernetes Operator, controller, admission webhook, or custom platform automation component.

experience with EKS, AKS, GKE, Rancher, Spectro Cloud, or other Kubernetes platforms.

experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Fluentd/Fluent Bit, or ELK/EFK stack.

experience with service mesh technologies such as Istio, Linkerd, or Cilium.

experience with Kubernetes backup, restore, or disaster recovery tooling such as Velero, Kasten, or Stash.

Open-source contributions in Kubernetes, cloud-native, Go, or platform engineering projects.

Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD).

Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA).

Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS).

HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate.

Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS) or equivalent Linux certification.

Skills

  • Golang
  • Development
  • Sre
  • Troubleshooting

Employee Value Proposition

Opportunity to join a platform engineering environment and develop modern Kubernetes-based automation using Go, Operators/controllers and GitOps. The role offers strong exposure to cloud-native engineering while working alongside senior engineers, Kubernetes architects, SRE and security teams on platforms supporting critical services.
