Junior Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics

University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust offers a fixed term training contract for a Junior Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics. This post is appointed on a fixed term basis for 12 months with the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose is to deliver defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.

Main duties of the job

The Junior Fellow will provide junior medical support for consultant led ward rounds, on calls and orthopaedic surgery, and participate in the Junior on call / out of hours rota fully supported at both registrar and consultant level. Duties include:

  • Basic patient care, daily ward rounds and ward cover.
  • Additional theatre and on call duties focusing training on orthopaedics.
  • Carry out routine admission, assessment and ongoing orthopaedic management of patients within consultant teams.
  • Assist senior/registrar on call in clerking new admissions and advising on emergency cases referred to the department.
  • Provide doctor supervision on wards within the T&O footprint and be the first point of contact for emergency and routine jobs.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and liaison with all health professionals involved in patient care.
  • Complete administrative tasks related to patient care and departmental management.
  • Engage in the clinical governance activity of the service.
  • Attend theatre days as first or second assistant on elective and trauma lists.
  • Engage in self development and clinical training days, including portfolio work, theatre, clinic or audits.
  • Comply with infection control practices.

Training plans will be jointly agreed with the Clinical Supervisor and Clinical Director to meet the training needs and interests of the Fellow and service needs. External study leave and internal teaching sessions are available.

Additional information

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors and dentists. Applicants requiring skilled worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria before applying. Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors and will be assigned an educational supervisor at the start of the post. There is strong support for continued professional development (CPD) with options for study leave.

Person Specification Qualifications, Training & Experience
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Completion of FY1 / FY2 rotation or equivalent
  • Current ALS
  • FRCA / MRCP / MRCS / MCEM or equivalent
  • Experience in T&O
  • Basic surgical skills
  • Prior NHS experience

  • Excellent communication and liaison skills with patients and colleagues
