Job Description
Junior Fellow in Surgery

Closing date: 08 July 2026

Start Date: 5th August 2026

Contract Type: Fixed term

Duration: 12 months

Purpose for Fixed Term: Short Term Funding

Responsibilities
  • Rotational placement across multiple surgical specialties, including trauma and orthopaedics, general surgery, surgical HDU, and ENT/OMFS, with 4 months in each.
  • Provide support to the surgery service at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Contribute to out hours on call rota within the assigned subspecialty, including weekend and night cover.
  • Participate in allocated theatres, departmental teaching sessions, and continuous professional development activities.
  • Manage and prioritise emergency care, assess and formulate immediate treatment plans for a range of acute problems.
  • Document clinical activity, audit, and teaching contributions as required by Trust policies.
Qualifications, Training and Experience
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Completion of UK Foundation training programme (Year 1 or equivalent).
  • Minimum of six months experience in the NHS and at least 4 months experience in a surgical specialty at Foundation Level.
  • Experience working as an SHO within a surgical specialty (post FY1) and less than 12 months surgical experience as an SHO.
  • Certification in Advanced Life Support (ALS), British Standards for Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) and/or ATLS.
  • Pass at MRCS Part A.
  • Evidence of teaching experience, audit participation, and a surgical log book with at least 10 cases.
  • Clear demonstration of sound clinical judgement, effective communication, teamwork, and organisational skills.
  • Understanding of equality, diversity, and patient confidentiality.
