Rate of pay - £22.89 - paid on a weekly basis
The Assembly Commission is seeking an Interpreter/Translator (Irish Language) with excellent interpreting, translation, and editorial skills to support the work of the Northern Ireland Assembly.
About the roleThe successful candidate will provide high-quality Irish-to-English simultaneous interpretation, as well as written translation and editorial support in both Irish and English. The role will help ensure that Irish-language speakers can participate fully in Assembly proceedings and Committee meetings.
Key responsibilities- Provide Irish to English, and on occasion vice versa, simultaneous interpretation fluently, confidently and accurately for Assembly plenary sittings, Committee meetings and any other events/functions as required.
- Provide a written report of any Irish used during Assembly plenary sittings, Committee meetings and other events/functions as required.
- Provide miscellaneous editorial services and advice in respect of Irish and English, including the translation of text, production of subtitles etc.
- Work independently and as part of a wider team to produce excellent results;
- Act on advice and direction from managers and undertake any reasonable task as and when required.
- Manage their own performance and take the initiative to identify their personal development needs and how those needs can be met;
- Perform the duties in line with the scheduling and timing of Assembly business, which can mean working, without notice, unsocial hours and being unable to take leave other than during recess periods, which are themselves subject to change.
The role is normally undertaken Monday to Friday. However, evening work-particularly on sitting days-and occasional weekend work may be required. Time off in lieu will be provided where applicable.
Due to the nature of Assembly business, working hours may occasionally be unsocial or changed at short notice. Annual leave may also be restricted to Assembly recess periods, which are subject to change.
Essential criteriaApplicants must have either:
- GCSE/GCE O-Level passes at grades A-C in four subjects, excluding English Language.
- GCSE/GCE O-Level English Language at grade A or A .
- A recognised Irish-language qualification equivalent to, or higher than, A-Level.
- Excellent spoken and written Irish and English.
- At least one year's experience providing Irish-language interpretation and translation services.
Or
- Excellent spoken and written Irish and English.
- At least three years' experience providing Irish-language interpretation and translation services.
Applications may also be considered from candidates holding formal qualifications of an equivalent or higher standard.
