Internal Audit Executive - FinancialLondon Borough Council Colindale, London (Hybrid) Permanent £48,003 - £53,172

We're recruiting an experienced Internal Audit Executive to join a busy in-house audit team within a large London local authority. This is a key role in the Assurance & Public Protection directorate, where you'll lead audit assignments end-to-end, provide expert advice to services across the organisation, and help drive continuous improvement in how we deliver assurance.

What you'll be doing

  • Planning and delivering a varied programme of internal audits from scoping through to final report, working largely unsupervised.
  • Applying a risk-based approach in line with Global Internal Audit Standards and the organisation's Audit Manual.
  • Identifying and reporting system weaknesses, financial issues, and areas for inclusion in the Annual Audit Plan.
  • Providing technical and professional audit advice to colleagues and senior stakeholders across the council.
  • Supporting the development of junior auditors within the team.
  • Representing the directorate at internal working groups and contributing to training for staff, members, and schools.
  • Maintaining strong links with the Corporate Anti-Fraud Team and contributing to relevant investigations and projects.

What we're looking for

  • A relevant professional qualification - CIPFA, AAT, IIA, or another CCAB-recognised equivalent - alongside a degree or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years' internal audit experience within a public sector organisation, conducting audits from start to finish.
  • Strong working knowledge of risk-based internal auditing, local government finance (including S151), and relevant codes of practice.
  • A high level of understanding of the services delivered by a large UK local authority.
  • Knowledge of contract and procurement assurance in a council context.
  • Confident with Microsoft Office; knowledge of computer-based audit software is a bonus.

Why apply

  • Hybrid working with flexibility - minimum 2-3 days per week on site in Colindale.
  • A varied and meaningful workload covering a wide range of council services.
  • A collaborative team committed to continuous improvement and high-quality assurance.
  • Competitive Grade J salary with clear scope for professional development.

This post is subject to a DBS check. The organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in everything it does.

Target start date: October 2026
