The Brief

We are working with a leading membership body operating at the forefront of the UK's scientific community. They are seeking an experienced interim to lead the development of a high-level strategic narrative on thefuture vision.

This work will articulate the national value of the physical sciences, their role in enabling priority technologies, and the conditions required to sustain a resilient, well-funded ecosystem. The output will be used to inform senior stakeholders across government, industry, and academia.

The Assignment

You will take ownership of shaping and delivering a compelling, evidence based strategic vision. This will involve:

  • Synthesising existing policy, research, and sector insights into a clear, authoritative narrative

  • Articulating how the physical sciences underpin key government priorities (e.g. innovation, economic growth, net zero, national security, advanced technologies)

  • Defining the characteristics of a stable and thriving physical sciences ecosystem, including funding models, skills pipelines, infrastructure, and collaboration

  • Engaging with senior stakeholders to test and refine strategic messaging

  • Producing high quality written outputs suitable for policy and advocacy use

Candidate Profile

We are looking for an individual who can operate credibly at the intersection of science, policy, and strategy:

  • Demonstrable experience in science policy, research policy, or a closely related field

  • Strong understanding of the UK R&D landscape and government priorities, including familiarity with the role and priorities of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT)

  • Ability to translate complex scientific and economic concepts into clear strategic narratives

  • Experience developing thought leadership, policy frameworks, or sector wide strategies

  • Comfortable engaging with senior stakeholders across academia, industry, and government

  • A background in the physical sciences or a closely related discipline is advantageous but not essential

Additional Value

Candidates with a blend of policy expertise and strategic advisory experience, particularly those who have shaped national or sector level visions, will be especially well suited.

Why This Role

This is a high impact assignment with the opportunity to shape how the physical sciences are positioned at a national level, informing investment, influencing policy, and supporting long term sector sustainability.
