Job summary

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an experienced and ambitious healthcare leader at Sancta Maria Hospital following the retirement of our current Hospital Director.

As Hospital Director, you will have responsibility for everything that happens within the hospital, from the quality of clinical care delivered to patients, through to financial performance, staff leadership, and regulatory compliance. You will help set the strategic direction of the hospital, develop its services, and be the visible leader that both your teams and the wider healthcare community look to.

This is a high-profile, senior leadership level role with oversight of a complex, multi-disciplinary hospital environment, reporting to the Executive Director of Clinical Care and Acute Operations.

  • Delivering the highest level of quality patient care, meeting all key business objectives and quality standards.
  • Providing effective, visible leadership to all clinical and support staff, ensuring full compliance with HMT's policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maximising admissions through operational efficiency, streamlined patient pathways, and effective discharge planning.
Main duties of the job
  • Driving operational performance and delivering both short- and long-term financial and business objectives
  • Ensuring safe, high-quality, and cost-effective clinical care is delivered consistently across the hospital
  • Developing and growing local markets for the hospital's services
  • Representing HMT effectively with the medical profession, statutory authorities, commissioners, and partner agencies
  • Exercising executive authority over all hospital staff, acting with delegated authority on behalf of HMT
  • Serving as the Registered Manager with the relevant registration authority (HIW/CQC)
Job responsibilities

The Hospital Director holds overall responsibility for the leadership, management, and strategic development of all hospital operations, ensuring alignment with the policies and procedures of HMT. Reporting to the HMT Executive Director of Community & Complex Care for the delivery of safe, high-quality, and cost-effective clinical care, and accountable to the HMT Chief Executive, the Hospital Director is instrumental in driving operational performance and achieving both short- and long-term financial and business objectives.

To hold overall management responsibility for Sancta Maria in accordance with the philosophies, standards and procedures approved by HMT.

To hold overall responsibility for the leadership, management, and coordination of clinical services provided by the hospital to meet patient/user expectations, clinical and professional objectives.

To prepare annual operating plans, including budgets, and participate in the rolling strategic planning process.

To maintain effective monitoring systems to ensure that all hospital services consistently achieve the required standards of quality.

To maintain financial monitoring to ensure that the financial performance of the hospital runs within agreed parameters and that services are run efficiently and within budget.

To work with the Medical Advisory Committee, the consultant users, and GPs to ensure that their views are known and that the implications of developments and change in clinical practice are acted upon.

To develop staffing policies that encourage good practice by the provision of relevant training and education and by effective methods of communication.

To promote, direct and manage relevant audit, research, and clinical standards as methodologies. To evaluate and develop the provision of patient care and services.

To ensure that all staff are aware of the overall activities of the hospital and the value of their own contribution and develop a sense of identity with the Hospital and HMT's ethos.

To ensure that all statutory and legal requirements are complied with and that appropriate authorities are kept informed of relevant activities within the Hospital.

To develop relationships with all local interests affecting the hospital including the NHS, general practitioners, consumer groups, local industry and the medical insurance companies.

To develop public relations programmes to encourage recognition of the hospital as an integral part of the health services in the local community.

To seek out and analyse charitable activities which could properly be provided or financially supported by the Hospital.

To manage maintenance programmes for buildings, plant, and equipment, and to recommend associated capital works.

To hold overall responsibility for Health & Safety requirements for the Hospital.

To hold responsibility for the custody, administration and dispensing of medicines within the hospital in accordance with the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971) and the Medicines Act (1968).

To undertake any other relevant functions required by HMT.

To be the registered Manager with the registration authority HIW/CQC.

Skills and Experience
  • Extensive senior leadership experience, preferably in an acute, independent, or complex healthcare setting
  • A strong track record of delivering operational and financial performance at hospital or equivalent level
  • Sound knowledge of HIW/CQC regulatory frameworks and the ability to sustain and improve quality standards
  • Significant experience managing multi-disciplinary clinical and non-clinical teams
  • Demonstrable change management capability, with strategic thinking across diverse services
  • Strong understanding of NHS and private healthcare policy drivers
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including with medical consultants, commissioners, and regulatory bodies

Person Specification Essential
  • Extensive experience working at a senior level, preferably within a similar setting.
  • Significant experience of managerial responsibility at a senior level.
  • Experience of effectively applying change management skills in an environment influenced both by internal and external changes with the ability to think and plan strategically across diverse services.
  • Sound working knowledge of relevant legislation (HIW/CQC) and regulatory requirements related to patient groups. Understanding of current trends relating to patient groups.
  • Strong awareness of key policy drivers in the NHS and private health care.
  • Knowledge of standards required (in line with HIW/CQC) and possesses proven track record of driving improvements in quality standards.
  • Knowledge of Human Resource policies, tools and techniques, including interviewing, conducting performance reviews, performance coaching and formal HR processes e.g., disciplinary.
  • Aptitude to utilise e system for the generation and interpretation of KPI reports.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills including good IT skills.
  • Strong understanding of information governance and data protection law relevant to healthcare.
  • Ability to engage with consultant users on behalf of the CMO to help ensure medical practice at the hospital consistently reflects expectations, as set out in national legislation and guidance. This includes recommendations issued by Government and regulatory bodies following the Paterson Review.
