Frontier is seeking an experienced Principal Designer to join our Cambridge studio on a full-time or hybrid basis with relocation support.

Frontier Developments is currently seeking an experienced and visionary Principal Game Designer to join our dedicated Design team. In this role, you will either act as the lead designer on a project or provide crucial support to project leadership, driving the overarching game vision and translating it into compelling, high-quality player experiences. This opportunity is available on a full in-studio basis or via a flexible hybrid model (requiring a minimum of three days per week in the studio). To ensure a smooth transition, Frontier provides a comprehensive relocation support package for candidates who need to relocate to the UK.

What's the Role?

As a Principal Designer at Frontier Developments, you are recognized as an expert at your craft. You will manage major feature areas on a project, mentor and inspire the wider design team, and create exemplar design work that sets the standard for quality. Whether steering design across an entire project or taking ownership of specific pillar systems, your leadership will directly shape how players interact with and enjoy our simulated universes.

Key Responsibilities & What You'll Be Doing:
  • Taking ownership of design for major feature areas, or where required, leading design direction across the entire project.
  • Working hand-in-hand with the Game Director to define and deliver flawlessly on the game's core vision.
  • Providing line-management and mentorship for design team members, actively developing their careers and maximizing their unique capabilities.
  • Managing project design risks while proactively identifying blockers, bottlenecks, and workflow inefficiencies.
  • Driving overall quality using regular playtests, comprehensive player feedback, QA reporting, and your own expert insights.
  • Designing deep game features, creating engaging in-game content, and meticulously balancing complex game systems.
  • Collaborating closely with other development disciplines to build mutual understanding and gain alignment throughout development.
  • Managing game design documentation and facilitating clear communication across the entire cross-functional team.
  • Working alongside Production to ensure effective feature prioritization, realistic scoping, and smooth work scheduling.
What You'll Bring (Requirements & Skills):

To thrive in this senior leadership role (Principal Designer), candidates must demonstrate a deep comprehension of design principles, player psychology, and team management:

  • Deep game knowledge across a wide range of genres, with a specialized focus on management and simulation games.
  • Substantial commercial game design experience gained in a senior or lead role.
  • Proven track record of successfully designing and delivering major game features from concept to completion.
  • Prior experience in managing, guiding, and motivating multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Strong, intuitive understanding of player psychology and engagement loops.
  • Excellent presentation skills, with extensive experience in pitching ideas to stakeholders both within and outside the project.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of a variety of game design theories, methodologies, and frameworks.
  • Exceptional ability to clearly communicate complex ideas across a variety of media types.
Bonus Skills & Nice-to-Haves:
  • Direct experience working on management simulation games.
  • Practical knowledge of UX/UI design principles and user experience optimization.
  • Experience supporting, scaling, and growing live games post-launch.
