SalaryThe starting salary is £48,995, which includes allowances totalling £3,009. The salary is broken down as £45,986 basic salary, which will increase annually until you reach the top of the scale £54,863, plus a location allowance of £2,009 and a non pensionable allowance of £1,000.

Job SummaryWe are recruiting a Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) Firearms Subject Matter Expert (SME) to work as an embedded member of staff in an independent assessment team. The role holder will work with the team to provide high level written and oral all source assessment of thematic threats to a large set of customers across Government. You will be responsible for producing all source intelligence assessments on national security threats to the UK, in response to specific requirements from the customer community, engaging with senior Whitehall customers and informing key policy makers.
You will help the team develop innovative approaches to assessing the threat - seeking out new sources of data, methodologies and ways of engaging with the wider customer community. You will work collaboratively with other assessment bodies, building relationships across Government customers and the UK Intelligence community. You will have the opportunity to undertake intelligence assessment training, shape products and regularly engage with customers and partners to develop the team's output.
Key TasksYou will be part of a small highly professional team of SMEs in thematic assessment. Your responsibilities include producing a wide range of reports relating to the threat actor use of firearms, including acquisition; illicit trading and movement of firearms internationally, the capability of firearms and ammunition and their use in attacks; all within the strategic UK internal threat picture. You should be self motivated, proactive in seeking out sources of information to support assessment writing and have a broad knowledge of firearms and ammunition types.
VettingThis post requires access to the most sensitive intelligence material on a daily basis. Applicants must hold or be prepared to undergo National Security Vetting (NSV) Developed Vetting (DV) level before taking up the post.
Applicants must be British nationality (some dual nationals may be ineligible) and hold an Enhanced Security Check (eSC)/Developed Vetting (DV) clearance. Additional security checks may be undertaken as part of the recruitment process, and travel to certain countries may be limited.
Confidentiality AgreementApplicants will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement upon taking up the post.
Required Skills & Experience- Work individually and as part of a team, delivering all source analysis and assessment on the threat actor use of firearms, including acquisition, firearm types, capabilities and trends.
- Maintain and evaluate incoming intelligence and use it to assess firearms threats to the UK and allies' interests.
- Apply analytical thinking and techniques to assess large volumes of information, establishing rationale and applying critical thinking methodologies.
- Compile concise, structured, and well written analytical assessments to provide strategic understanding.
- Conduct robust quality assurance of analytical assessments through group discussions and formal sign off processes.
- Deliver formal or informal tailored briefings to varied audiences using excellent presentation skills.
- Collaborate with others within and across the organisation, responding to additional responsibilities at times of increased demand.
- Possess in depth knowledge of firearms and ammunition of all types, their capabilities and tactical application.
- Hold experience of applying logical and critical techniques to intelligence, information or complex datasets to produce clear written reports.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience working on strategic analytical products relating to national security threats.
- Knowledge of legislation relating to National Security (Terrorism Act 2000 & 2006, National Security Bill 2023, Counter Terrorism & Borders Security Act 2019 and Investigatory Powers Act 2016).
- Operational (military or policing) experience of armed operations.
