Health and Safety Manager

The Health and Safety Manager will support the Head of Trust Health and Safety in the day to day operational provision of expert advice, guidance, support, coaching, training, monitoring and reporting on all aspects of corporate health and safety. In particular, the post holder will:
- Work closely with Divisions, Corporate Directorates, Governance Committees, Management Groups, Project Teams, Senior and Line Managers, Technical Specialists, Staff and Contractors in the management of corporate Health & Safety risks, concerns, incidents and learning.
- Assist the Trust in monitoring compliance against the requirements of relevant Health & Safety legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, Standards and Guidance (including those specific to the NHS), and against relevant Trust policies and arrangements.
- Support the Head of Trust Health and Safety in the development, implementation and maintenance of relevant Policies, Procedures, Protocols and Guidelines in relation to Health & Safety, and in the delivery of the overall Trust Health & Safety management system.
- Deputise for the Head of Trust Health and Safety when requested, providing strategic reporting and input.
- Prepare or contribute to and support the implementation of relevant health and safety related policies and procedures linked to Trust activities, and ensure that these are subject to regular periodic and as required reviews.
- Support Divisions, Directorates, Departments, Wards and Specialities with the identification, prioritisation and management of key risks, and support managers in the development of appropriate risk assessments and action plans to address these risks.
- Support the Trust's risk management programme by ensuring health and safety risk assessments meet the legal, national and Trust standards, and that risks are entered on to the Trust risk register for ongoing monitoring and mitigation as far as reasonably practicable.
- Work particularly closely with the Trust's Estates and Facilities Team regarding building, premises, plant and equipment (installation, use and maintenance) safety and compliance, as well as regarding soft services, contractors, projects and environmental matters where appropriate.
- Recognised Degree or Specialist Diploma (e.g. NEBOSH / NCRQ) in Health and Safety (or actively working towards).
- Graduate member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (GradIOSH). Technical membership (TechIOSH) will be considered only in exceptional cases.
- Evidence of recent and relevant continual professional development (CPD).
- Knowledge and experience in implementing HSG 65.
- Sound understanding of health and safety and fire safety legislation, standards and technical guidance, and their application.
- Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH).
- Recognised fire safety qualification e.g. NEBOSH or FPA.
- Experience of working in an NHS, Public Sector, Higher Education or Highly Technical environment.
- Knowledge, interpretation and application of the Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs).
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
