Job Description
Health & Safety Manager Main Contractor London
About the Client: SSA are recruiting on behalf of a medium sized Main Contractor who is experienced in Design and Build and Traditional projects. The company is involved in multiple business sectors including commercial, residential, hotel and industrial projects including;
- A transformative mixed-use development in London, combining residential apartments and co-living spaces within an 18-storey tower. It also includes a new office for Women's Pioneer Housing and enhanced public spaces.
- An £84 million scheme in Ealing delivering 296 new homes (50% affordable), alongside the restoration of the Grade II-listed walled garden and the historic Twyford Abbey building.
About the Role:
Reporting to the H&S Director you will be responsible for;
- Provide direction, support, and assistance to all project personnel to enable them to manage their health and safety duties and responsibilities.
- Ensure project compliance with all applicable UK Health & Safety legislation, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, CDM Regulations 2015, and RIDDOR 2013.
- Develop, implement, and update health and safety and CDM procedures, ensuring alignment with CDM-2015 regulations and HSE guidance.
- Monitor site activities to ensure that construction operations and subcontractors are complying with safety requirements and control measures.
- Conduct Health & Safety inspections and audits and follow through with responsible persons to ensure timely close-out.
- Assist in the preparation and review of project H&S documentation (e.g. RAMS, Construction Phase Plans, Lift Plans), including those submitted by third parties.
- Maintain accurate records and data using H&S system software to ensure compliance with UK legislation, company procedures, and audit requirements.
- Arrange third-party H&S training for project teams and deliver internal briefings/toolbox talks to promote behavioural safety practices.
- Lead and participate in accident/incident investigations in line with HSE guidance, making practical recommendations to avoid recurrence.
- Support H&S performance appraisals of subcontractors and supply chain partners.
- Collate, analyse, and present project H&S statistics (including near-misses and RIDDOR-reportable incidents), and provide reports to the Line Manager with insights for improvement.
- Prepare H&S related prequal and tender submissions
- Carry out all duties in accordance with the company's H&S Requirements document as explained by the Health & Safety Director.
About the Requirements:
- Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within the UK construction industry.
- Strong working knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation, including CDM 2015, and its practical application on construction sites.
- Hands-on experience with site inspections, statutory compliance checks, and risk assessments.
- Confident delivering toolbox talks, behavioural safety initiatives, and internal H&S briefings.
- Competent in using H&S system software for reporting, data collection, and compliance tracking.
- Skilled in incident investigation and root cause analysis, with the ability to make data-led recommendations.
- Experience evaluating H&S performance across subcontractors and the wider supply chain.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to compile, interpret, and report on H&S performance metrics.
- Professional H&S qualifications: Relevant degree or diploma in occupational health and safety and minimum 3 years' experience working with a similar sized Principal Contractor.
