Job Title: Commercial Grounds Maintenance Operative
Job Purpose
The Commercial Grounds Maintenance Operative is responsible for delivering high-quality grounds maintenance and environmental services across Monmouthshire. The role involves maintaining parks, open spaces, highways verges, schools, housing sites, cemeteries, sports facilities, and commercial client locations to ensure they remain safe, clean, attractive, and sustainable.
Working independently and as part of a team, the successful candidate will use a range of grounds maintenance equipment while supporting the Council's environmental objectives and commitment to excellent service delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Grounds Maintenance
- Carry out grass cutting using pedestrian and ride-on mowing equipment.
- Operate strimmers, hedge cutters, mowers, and other grounds maintenance machinery.
- Maintain public open spaces, schools, housing areas, parks, and commercial sites.
- Undertake shrub bed maintenance, pruning, planting, weeding, and landscaping activities.
- Assist with sports pitch marking and maintenance.
- Support environmental enhancement and sustainability projects.
- Empty litter bins and carry out litter picking duties.
- Respond to fly-tipping incidents and follow evidence collection procedures.
- Assist with street cleansing duties as required.
- Help maintain high standards of environmental cleanliness across the county.
Cemetery & Arboricultural Duties
- Assist with grave digging and cemetery maintenance following appropriate training.
- Support tree maintenance and arboricultural activities.
- Undertake seasonal grounds and environmental maintenance tasks.
Vehicle & Equipment Responsibilities
- Conduct daily safety checks on vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
- Keep vehicles, tools, and machinery clean and operational.
- Report defects and maintenance issues promptly.
- Ensure all equipment is used in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and health and safety requirements.
Emergency Response
- Participate in emergency response activities including:
- Flood response and sandbag deployment
- Snow clearance operations
- Storm damage response
- Participate in standby rotas, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays when required.
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, horticulture, or a similar outdoor role.
- Experience operating:
- Strimmers
- Hedge cutters
- Ride-on mowers
- Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to undertake physically demanding work.
- Experience working effectively within a team environment.
- Local authority or commercial grounds maintenance experience.
- Sports pitch maintenance experience.
- Cemetery maintenance knowledge.
- Arboricultural or tree maintenance experience.
- Street cleansing or environmental services experience.
Essential Qualifications & Requirements
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation and safe working practices.
- Ability to work flexibly and adapt to operational requirements.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Commitment to delivering high-quality customer service.
- Willingness to undertake training as required.
Desirable Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 in Horticulture, Landscaping, or equivalent.
- Chainsaw or Arboricultural Qualifications.
- First Aid Qualification.
- HGV Licence.
Additional Information
- Hours: 37 hours per week with participation in the Annualised Hours Scheme.
- Flexible working pattern to meet seasonal service demands.
- Occasional evening, weekend, and bank holiday working may be required.
- Participation in emergency call-out and standby rotas is expected.
