Job Description
Moulding Engineer

We are looking for a Moulding Engineer who will join our global engineering team based in North Dublin. The successful candidate will be responsible for design, development, implementation and ongoing support of plastic moulded commodities that support all of Abbvie's products, including devices.

As a technical expert in moulding and a project manager for moulding projects, you will work closely with R&D, operations, supply chain and suppliers on a regular basis.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Manage moulded commodities over their lifecycle, including tactical and strategic activities such as product, process, quality and cost improvement initiatives, supplier and resin changes, and obsolescence planning.
  • Troubleshoot moulding issues in conjunction with suppliers and lead or support internal investigations as needed.
  • Work closely with moulding suppliers to ensure reliable supply of parts and meet cost objectives. Perform capacity analysis for moulds, presses and assembly automation and recommend future investment.
  • Ensure adherence to the quality system through creation and update of specifications, metrology setup, design control and qualification, FMEA, and other appropriate activities. Identify critical dimensions and work with suppliers to maintain proper process controls.
  • Lead process design and development, tooling/automation design, procurement and qualification.
  • Advise on moulding and tooling process troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate activities of prototype tooling and mould design and builds.
  • Oversee mould maintenance programs for company-owned moulds, troubleshooting and recommending repairs of tools.
  • Be proficient in 3D programs such as SolidWorks, ProE or AutoCAD.
  • Oversee the process of design review and build of moulds at tool vendors, FATs, DOE, dimensional analysis, tool corrections and validation of moulds.
  • Document design decision history, test and observation activities formally using division document systems, project notes or formal test reports. Knowledge of Six Sigma troubleshooting and lean manufacturing processes is a plus.
  • Perform Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
  • Seek appropriate incremental approvals in a cross functional team environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Plastics Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10+ years of technical work experience with 3+ years of plastic injection and/or blow moulding design and process support experience, preferably in the medical device industry.
  • Strong knowledge of plastics processes, resins and tooling. Knowledge of mould-making, CNC equipment, Wire EDMs, surface finishes, grinders and hand tools used in mould build is essential.
  • Knowledge of injection moulding equipment, inspection procedures and SPC analysis preferred.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and ISO requirements preferred.
  • Proven ability to participate in a team atmosphere; exhibit and create a sense of urgency and maintain effective working relationships with peers, customers and vendors.
