About the client

To achieve Britain's climate goals, there is an urgent need for a national shift from fossil fuel heating to low-carbon alternatives-and heat networks offer a proven, scalable option.

Our client is one of the UK's leading developers of low-carbon heat networks, committed to decarbonising heat in towns and cities and helping accelerate the transition to net zero.

Their heat networks offer the lowest-cost, simplest, and fastest route to reducing carbon emissions from heating at scale, while also creating a long-term foundation for healthier, greener urban areas.

Our client has grown from a start-up to managing more than £600 million worth of heat network projects, with plans to invest £1 billion over the next eight years to build new networks across the UK.

The team includes some of the most experienced professionals in the sector-having delivered and operated more than 100 district heating projects.

About the job

We are seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative GIS Mapping Analyst to support the planning and development of district heat networks. This role is pivotal in identifying anchor customers, planning our networks, and working closely with the sales and technical teams to deliver sustainable and cost-effective heat solutions.

What you'll do Customer Analysis

Use GIS tools to identify and prioritise high-demand buildings (e.g., hospitals, universities, council buildings) as potential anchor customers for heat network development and mapping these.

Initial Network Routing

Plan and assess efficient pipe routes with spatial analysis, factoring in terrain, infrastructure, and land ownership. Gather and analyse data from sources such as the Land Registry, Ordnance Survey, and the Environment Agency.

Sales Team Coordination

Collaborate with the sales team to align GIS insights with customer engagement strategies. Provide maps, data layers, and spatial analysis outputs to support outreach and feasibility discussions.

Data Management

Collect, clean, and manage geospatial datasets including potential customer buildings, land use, and district heating network routes.

Scenario Modelling

Support the simulation of network configurations and expansion scenarios using GIS-based modelling tools.

Visual Communication

Produce clear, visually engaging maps and reports for use with internal teams, potential customers and key stakeholders.

As-built Asset Mapping

Contribute to the creation and maintenance of heat network infrastructure map layers for long-term asset management.

What you'll need
  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS); note that QGIS is utilised.
  • Experience with spatial analysis and network modelling.
  • Strong map production skills with excellent attention to detail to ensure all outputs are to the highest standard.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, organising workloads to meet project deadlines.
Highly Desirable
  • Experience in the district heating sector.
  • Knowledge of automation in GIS tools (e.g. Python-based scripting or using the model designer in QGIS).
  • Familiarity with best practice around storing geospatial data (e.g. using PostgreSQL databases with a PostGIS extension, or other similar relational databases).

All applicants must be eligible to legally work in the UK.
