Geo-Environmental Engineer - Birmingham

PJA is seeking an enthusiastic Engineering Geologist/Geotechnical Engineer/Geo-environmental Consultant to join our Ground Engineering and Contaminated Land Team, based in Birmingham.
The successful candidate will form part of a team of geologists, geotechnical specialists and geo-environmental consultants who pride ourselves on being able to offer robust assessments relating to geotechnical considerations and soil and groundwater contamination. In conjunction with the wider engineering team at PJA, we provide a diverse range of services from preliminary due diligence assessments associated with land acquisitions, to the design and oversight of effective holistic ground solutions to enable the development of both brownfield and greenfield sites for a range of clients.
The successful candidate should ideally have between 2 and 4 years' relevant post-graduate experience and should be able to demonstrate a grounding in site investigation and/or consultancy. A keenness to learn about all areas of geotechnical assessment and contaminated land and their interface with land development is crucial. The responsibilities for this position are anticipated to include, but are not limited to the following:
- Preparation of Phase 1 desk studies and completion of site walkovers;
- Design, set up and monitoring of site investigations, including managing contractor(s);
- Soil sampling and logging in accordance with BS5930:2015+A1:2020, BS10175:2011+A2:2017 and Eurocode 7
- Gas and groundwater monitoring and sampling;
- Scheduling of chemical and geotechnical laboratory testing;
- Critically reviewing contractors' factual data and reports;
- Generic quantitative risk assessments for human health;
- Preliminary controlled waters risk assessments;
- Preparation of Phase 2 geo-environmental interpretative reports;
- Preparation of geotechnical reports in accordance with CD622: Managing Geotechnical Risk
- Develop geotechnical ground models for use in design;
- Appraisal of potential ground engineering constraints;
- Preparation of preliminary foundation zoning plans;
- Providing input to earthworks specifications;
- Site monitoring of earthworks construction;
- Preparation of Earthworks Validation Reporting;
- Assisting with preparation of fee proposals for clients;
- Preparation of site-specific health and safety risk assessments for site work;
The responsibilities for this position will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Preparation of Phase 1 Desk Studies
- Design, set up and management of site investigations, including sampling and logging of in situ soils and rocks
- Scheduling of chemical and geotechnical testing
- Preparation of generic and site specific health and safety risk assessments
- Gas and groundwater monitoring
- Recording and interpretation of site data
- Preparation of Phase 2 Geo-environmental Reports
- Mentoring of junior staff
The ideal candidate should have experience in the use of ground investigation data management software such as HoleBASE or Openground, have excellent MS Word and Excel skills, and should embrace digital ways of working. Some experience of AutoCAD is also beneficial. The successful candidate will be required to prepare clear and concise reports and other written communications, and they should be able to demonstrate that they can achieve this to a good standard, while demonstrating good organisational skills and working to tight deadlines. Verbal communication is also of key importance, and the successful candidate will be able to confidently communicate with peers, more senior colleagues, contractors and clients.
Applicants will ideally have membership of a professional organisation such as the Geological Society or the ICE and should be demonstrating an ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development. This is a permanent position based in our Birmingham office, however the candidate should have a willingness to regularly travel to and from sites around the UK for site work and meetings.
