The RoleThe Fire Safety Advisor is part of a team of specialist fire safety and compliance professionals reporting to the Fire Safety Manager. The main purpose of the job is to provide advice and guidance on fire safety matters to the Principal Contractor (NNB GenCo) to ensure fire safety standards are set and maintained across the HPC project. The post holder will also support and promote a positive fire safety culture among contractors and stakeholders, develop and implement fire safety systems and policies, perform audits and inspections, undertake fire risk assessments, report on fire safety matters to relevant personnel and committees, support the on site Fire & Rescue Team, and continually improve fire safety arrangements and systems on the construction site.
Principal Accountabilities- Provide fire safety advice and guidance to the Principal Contractor, wider contractor base and relevant committees.
- Support the development of fire safety arrangements (both general and process related) and procedures that meet legislative requirements and best practice.
- Develop, maintain, and review the implementation of the Principal Contractor's fire safety policy, fire management arrangements and fire risk assessments, in conjunction with other contractors.
- Provide fire safety advice to Project Managers and design teams and develop building fire strategies.
- Undertake fire safety assurance audits, inspections and monitoring activities of NNB controlled areas and all site contractors to ensure compliance with site fire safety standards and UK legislation.
- Carry out suitable and sufficient fire risk assessments on behalf of the Principal Contractor.
- Review fire risk assessments and DSEAR risk assessments conducted by other organisations relevant to the HPC project.
- Assist in liaising with contractors to develop fire safety services for construction areas to meet future needs and standards.
- Act as an advisor to Health and Safety Groups on matters relating to general fire safety, process fire safety, and explosive atmospheres, providing required reports.
- Support investigation of fire related incidents on the construction site and associated development sites.
- Support the collation and reporting of incident data.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of relevant practices and regulations through literature searches, professional contacts, meetings, courses and conferences.
- Undertake other activities or responsibilities within competence as directed by the line manager commensurate with the grade of the post.
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation and regulation pertaining to fire safety management.
- Good knowledge of general fire safety arrangements for construction and complex sites, including equipment and roles.
- Good working knowledge of process fire risk in high-risk activities.
- Understanding of fire safety implications in relation to DSEAR.
- Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks.
- Self motivated and able to manage own work priorities and actions.
- Effective negotiating and influencing skills for developing and maintaining constructive relationships.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to assimilate, analyse and present complex problems, recommend actions and ensure implementation.
- Understanding of dynamic risk assessment principles in a construction environment.
- Proven track record of fire safety risk assessments, audits and compliance determination in commercial and construction sectors.
- Membership of an appropriate professional organisation (e.g., Institute of Fire Engineers).
- NEBOSH Fire Safety & Risk Management Certificate (or similar qualification).
- Desirable to have a degree/diploma level education or equivalent experience.
- Experience of successfully developing and implementing fire safety plans, policies and procedures.
