Environmental, Health and Safety Officer

Location: Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo

Contract Type: Permanent, Full Time

Reporting to: Managing Director

About the role

Homecare medical is a SME, with nationwide locations and is headquartered in Co Mayo.

We are currently seeking to appoint a Environmental Health and Safety Officer to join our team in Ballyhaunis. In this role you will work closely with the Department Manager and other key collaborators to help us deliver on our mission and commitment to safety and environment obligations by developing, implementing, and monitoring safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with legal regulations (such as EPA, HSA) and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Compliance & Regulation: Ensure compliance with all environmental and safety legislation. Maintain a working knowledge of Health and Safety Authority (HSA) regulations.
  • Inspections & Auditing: Conduct regular site safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure compliance with ISO standards.
  • ISO14001: Maintain documentation and environmental management system, for continued compliance with ISO14001 EMS standards
  • Training & Education: Develop, coordinate, and deliver EHS training courses for employees, including inductions, manual handling, and emergency response training.
  • Safety and Environmental Promotion: Foster a proactive safety and a n environmentally conscious culture through communication and regular meetings.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses, preparing reports to determine root causes and implementing corrective actions.
  • Emergency planning: Conduct fire drills, update Evacuation registers and provide training - e.g. Fire Warden duties, Spill Response etc.
  • Environmental Management and Reporting: Compile and submit reports related to waste and packaging on related portals (REPAK, PRL & WEEE)
  • Documentation: Maintain up-to-date EHS records, safety statements, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and policies.
  • Communication: Act as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies (e.g., EPA, Local Authorities) and manage contractor safety.
  • Quality: Assist the quality manager with audits, preparation and quality administration as and when required.
Qualification & Experience Required
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree (Level 7/8) or a high-level diploma (minimum Level 6) in Health & Safety is required.
  • Experience: 2-5 years of experience in an EHS role, with a strong preference for experience in construction or industrial sectors.
  • Skills: Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), strong communication skills, and knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 9001.
  • Certification: Specialized training in auditing is highly desirable.
Skills & Experience Required
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written skills for reporting, training, and influencing personnel.
  • Analytical: Ability to analyze data for root cause analysis and reporting.
  • Technical: Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and safety management software.
  • Interpersonal: Strong, persuasive communicator capable of driving a positive EHS culture and handling, at times, confrontational situations.
  • Organizational: Excellent time management and attention to detail, capable of managing multiple projects and site audits.
  • Flexibility: Some travel between sites may be occasionally required.
