Job Description

Job Title: English Tutor

Location: York, North Yorkshire

Contract: Part Time, Term Time Only

Start Date: September 2026 or sooner

Salary: £25 - £35 per hour

Are you a passionate and supportive English Tutor looking to help young people overcome barriers to learning and achieve success in English?

GSL Education are hiring a passionate English Tutor to undertake a role within a secondary school in York. This is a rewarding opportunity to support students within a specialist inclusion provision, helping learners in Key Stages 3 and 4 to develop their literacy skills, confidence, and engagement with education.

As an English Tutor, you will work closely with students who may require additional support to access the curriculum. You will deliver targeted English interventions, adapt learning activities to meet individual needs, and help create a positive and nurturing environment where every student can thrive.

  • Deliver tailored English support to students across Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Plan and deliver engaging literacy and English intervention sessions
  • Support students who may face social, emotional, behavioural, or learning challenges
  • Adapt resources and teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs
  • Encourage students to develop confidence in reading, writing, speaking, and listening
  • Monitor, assess, and record student progress effectively
  • Build positive relationships that promote engagement, wellbeing, and achievement
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff and support teams to provide effective student support
  • A degree in English, Education, or a related subject
  • Previous experience working with secondary-aged students in an educational setting
  • Experience supporting students with additional learning needs is desirable
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and behaviour management skills
  • A patient, resilient, and nurturing approach to supporting young people
  • The ability to motivate and engage students who may be disengaged from learning
  • An up-to-date CV covering the last ten years (with any gaps explained)
  • An enhanced DBS certificate registered on the update service, or willingness to apply
