The Electrical Maintenance Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, fault-finding and repair of electrical systems, equipment and infrastructure across NIBRT's purpose-built bioprocessing training and research facility in Blackrock, Co. Dublin (we are on campus at UCD).
This is a site-based role at NIBRT's facility. The post holder will be required to wear appropriate PPE and, where necessary when working in or around controlled areas. The role may involve manual handling, working at height and occasional outside normal working hours activities including essential maintenance on occasional Saturdays. All work must be carried out in accordance with NIBRT's health & safety policies, permit-to-work system and relevant statutory regulations.

Role PurposeWorking within the Facilities team, the role keeps the institute's pilot-scale upstream, downstream and fill-finish process equipment, research labs, cleanroom utilities and building services running safely and reliably, supporting NIBRT's mission to deliver world-class training and research for the biopharmaceutical manufacturing industry in a realistic, GMP-simulated environment.
Key Responsibilities- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive/breakdown repairs on electrical distribution systems, switchgear, motor control centers, panels and associated infrastructure throughout the facility.
- Maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems supporting process utilities (WFI, clean steam, puri-fied water, HVAC) and pilot-scale bioprocessing equipment used in upstream, downstream and fill-finish training areas.
- Respond promptly to electrical breakdowns and call-outs to minimise disruption to training programmes, research activities and cleanroom operations.
- Support and maintain building management system (BMS) inputs/outputs, fire and life-safety systems, standby generators and UPS systems.
- Install new electrical circuits, equipment and lighting in line with approved drawings, standards and change control procedures.
- Complete maintenance records, calibration logs and compliance documentation accurately and in a timely manner, in line with GMP documentation practices.
- Liaise with and supervise external contractors engaged in specialist work, ensuring work is carried out safely and to specification.
- Identify and escalation risks, defects or non-conformances, and contribute to root-cause analysis and corrective/preventative actions (CAPA).
- Work within, and help uphold, NIBRT's health & safety, permit-to-work and change control procedures at all times.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment reliability, energy efficiency and facility compliance.
- Recognised electrical trade qualification (completed apprenticeship, QQI Level 6 Advanced Craft Certificate in Electrical, or equivalent)
- Post-apprenticeship experience in an industrial, pharmaceutical or facilities maintenance environment.
- 3+ years' post-qualification experience is preferred.
- NIBRT is committed to developing talent, applicants with 1-2 years' post-qualification experience will be considered if demonstrating potential, aptitude, and willingness to learn.
- Sound working knowledge of electrical distribution systems, single- and three-phase power, motor control and low-voltage systems.
- Strong commitment to health and safety, with experience working to permit-to-work systems.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to maintain clear and accurate maintenance records.
- Previous experience in a GMP, pharmaceutical, biotech or other regulated manufacturing environment.
- Exposure to building management systems (BMS), PLCs or building controls.
- Experience working in or around cleanroom environments and associated gowning/contamination-control requirements.
- Experience with a CMMS (computerised maintenance management system) for logging and tracking work orders.
- Qualification or experience relevant to instrumentation or process control.
- Safety-first mindset with meticulous attention to detail and documentation.
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving ability, with a methodical approach to diagnosing electrical issues.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative, while knowing when to elevate.
- Good team player who collaborates well with engineering, facilities, training and research colleagues.
- Flexible and responsive to the operational needs of a busy, multi-use training and research facility.
- Organised, with the ability to prioritise competing maintenance demands.
