Job Title: Electrical Facility Support Engineer
Job Description
This role supports the safe and reliable operation of a critical environment data centre by assisting with the monitoring, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of electrical and related building systems. Working under supervision, you will provide on-site support for electrical infrastructure, escort third-party contractors, and help ensure that all activities comply with safety, security, and operational procedures. The position is fully on-site in Newport and involves working flexible hours within core business times to maintain high availability of essential services.
Responsibilities
- Provide escort support for third-party contractors, sub-contractors, vendors, and service providers working within the data centre.
- Carry out routine tasks such as site rounds and initial assessments of equipment performance under supervision.
- Perform basic monitoring of the performance of maintenance and operations of equipment, including electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety systems, with supervision.
- Assist with safe emergency monitoring and response to abnormal conditions by following established Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs).
- Follow and uphold all safety procedures while performing work and comply fully with all physical security procedures and policies.
- Take daily operational readings of electrical equipment during routine rounds, including temperatures, voltages, currents, and other key parameters.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for planned work activities in a critical environment.
- Energise cabinets in colocation environments in line with documented procedures and safety standards.
- Support quarterly and annual preventative maintenance activities on Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance on system control panels and batteries as directed.
- Assist in the troubleshooting, repair, replacement, and calibration of instrument sensors.
- Support electrical infrastructure across the data centre campus, which may include a single large-capacity facility or several smaller facilities.
- Use and support building management and electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS) to help monitor and control critical equipment.
- Assist with Remote Power Panel (RPP) shutdown of one source while maintaining critical load through the remaining source.
- Support Power Distribution Unit (PDU) shutdowns for power meter replacement and related activities.
- Participate in Power Interruption Testing (PIT) and master controller shutdown or replacement activities under supervision.
- Apply a fundamental understanding of the National Electrical Code when carrying out tasks and reviewing work.
- Work to agreed performance standards, ensuring tasks are completed accurately, safely, and within required timeframes.
- Collaborate with colleagues, contractors, and stakeholders to maintain a high-availability, critical infrastructure environment.
Essential Skills
- Fundamental understanding of the National Electrical Code.
- Previous experience working in a data centre environment.
- Current OSHA or OSHA-approved NFPA 70E qualification.
- experience with electrical systems in high-availability assembly, manufacturing, or critical infrastructure environments such as data centres, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, or similar fields.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent level of education.
- At least 5 years' work or applied learning experience in technical fields such as automotive, electrical, controls, or data centres.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include rotating shifts
- Basic ability to use Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Ability to work safely in a critical environment and follow detailed SOPs, EOPs, and safety protocols.
- Capability to work on-site within core business hours between 7:00 and 19:00, Monday to Friday.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- experience with building management systems and electrical power monitoring systems (EPMS).
- Hands-on experience with UPS systems, system control panels, batteries, PDUs, and RPPs in a live critical environment.
- Familiarity with Power Interruption Testing and master controller shutdown or replacement activities.
- Strong attention to detail when taking operational readings and completing logs.
- Good communication skills for coordinating with contractors, vendors, and internal teams.
- Ability to interpret and follow technical documentation, SOPs, and EOPs.
- Comfort working in a structured, procedure-driven environment with high safety and security expectations.
