Job Description

Education Lawyer£51,356 - £57,403 Permanent Hybrid (2 days office-based)

Make a real impact in education law within a supportive and well-structured local authority legal team.

A local authority in the West Midlands is looking to appoint an experienced Education Lawyer to join its in-house legal service, with a focus on SEND and education-related matters. This is a substantive role offering meaningful casework, sensible hybrid working, and the chance to develop within a collaborative team.

The role

You will advise and represent the authority on a broad range of education law matters, including SEND appeals. This is a hands-on position with responsibility for:

  • Managing a caseload of education law matters, including SEND Tribunal appeals

  • Representing the authority at hearings, meetings, panels and other forums

  • Providing clear, pragmatic legal advice to client departments

  • Working closely with colleagues across legal and education services to resolve complex issues

SEND Tribunals are currently fully remote, and external counsel is instructed on the most complex or high-risk cases.

About you

You will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with relevant practice rights and:

  • Solid experience in education law, including SEND Tribunal work

  • Confidence representing clients and meeting strict statutory deadlines

  • Strong drafting, negotiation and advisory skills

  • Experience working in, or alongside, a local authority legal service

  • A collaborative approach and the ability to adapt to changing priorities

Why consider this role?
  • Hybrid working: 40% office attendance (typically two days per week)

  • Supportive team structure: a small, experienced team with clear supervision and peer support

  • Flexibility: open to discussions around working patterns, including compressed or part-time hours

  • Development and progression: opportunities to broaden experience across education and adults' law

  • Convenient office location with strong transport links

This is a team that values development, knowledge-sharing and practical problem-solving.

If you are an education lawyer looking for high-quality work, flexibility and a genuinely supportive environment, this is well worth a conversation.
