Location: Hybrid - Newcastle (2-3 days onsite)
Rate: £575 per day (Inside IR35)
Contract: 6 months (likely extension)

About the Role

We're seeking an experienced DevOps Engineer (AWS) with active Security Check (SC) clearance to join a high-profile public sector programme in Newcastle. You'll be part of a multidisciplinary agile delivery team, responsible for designing, automating, and managing secure, scalable AWS infrastructure.

This role is ideal for an engineer passionate about automation, security, and continuous delivery - someone who can bring deep AWS knowledge and DevOps best practices to a complex, fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, deploy, and manage AWS cloud environments with a focus on automation, scalability, and security.

  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform (or CloudFormation).

  • Implement and optimise CI/CD pipelines using GitLab, GitHub, or similar tools.

  • Automate infrastructure builds, testing, and deployments to ensure consistent, compliant delivery.

  • Manage and operate Kubernetes clusters for containerised workloads.

  • Apply OWASP security principles across infrastructure and CI/CD workflows.

  • Monitor and troubleshoot environments using tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack, or CloudWatch.

  • Collaborate within an Agile delivery team, supporting continuous improvement and DevSecOps culture.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Active SC Clearance (mandatory)

  • Proven hands-on experience with AWS core services (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, Route53, VPC, CloudFront, CloudWatch, IAM)

  • Expertise in Terraform and Infrastructure as Code practices

  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes architecture and operations

  • Proficiency in GitLab/GitHub for source control and pipeline management

  • Solid Scripting ability in Python, Bash, or PowerShell

  • Strong grounding in Agile and collaborative technical delivery

  • Knowledge of OWASP and secure software delivery principles

Desirable

  • AWS certifications (eg AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional, Solutions Architect)

  • Experience working with UK public sector clients or regulated industries

  • Familiarity with CloudFormation or Pulumi
