Deputy Chief Medical Officer - Clinical Transformation & Digital Innovation

5PA - Fixed Term Contract for 3 years + Substantive PA in Specialty (Up to 5PA)

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is entering an exciting period of transformation, with major investment in clinical innovation, clinical digital capability and new models of care. We are seeking an exceptional clinical leader to join our senior team as Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Clinical Transformation & Digital Innovation. This high impact leadership role will help shape the future of care for our patients and communities across Swindon and Wiltshire, working across clinical, digital, workforce and cultural transformation.

Main duties of the job

You will work with clinical teams and community partners to create sustainable improvements in patient outcomes and support the Trust's transformation agenda. As a core member of the Chief Medical Officer directorate, you will work with senior clinical leadership and contribute to the strategic leadership of the Trust.

Job responsibilities
  • Provide senior clinical leadership for digital transformation, ensuring digitisation supports improved patient outcomes, safety, reliability and staff experience.
  • Act as a key member of the Clinical Digital Transformation team, providing senior clinical oversight and challenging digital strategy, prioritisation and delivery.
  • Provide clinical leadership in preparation for and implementation of the Electronic Patient Record (EPR), ensuring workflow redesign supports clinicians, streamlines processes, reduces administrative burden and enhances patient safety and care quality.
  • Work closely with the Chief Clinical Information Officer (CCIO), CIO, digital programme teams and operational leaders to ensure clinical alignment in all digital initiatives, with awareness of digital inclusion.
  • Oversee safe clinical adoption of new technologies - such as EPR optimisation, digital documentation, AI supported tools, remote monitoring and virtual care models.
  • Lead clinical teams to ensure digital systems support clinical quality, patient safety, NICE guidance compliance and effective multidisciplinary communication.
  • Champion a culture of digital inclusion and readiness, supporting staff to adopt new digital practices confidently and safely.
Person specification Qualifications
  • Fully registered with the GMC with unblemished record.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Qualification or equivalent experience in management, leadership or quality improvement.
  • Trained appraiser.
  • Evidence of continuing leadership or managerial development.
Experience
  • Substantial clinical experience at consultant level.
  • Strong reputation as a clinician and clinical leader, with a proven track record of producing high quality results in the management and leadership of clinical services.
  • Experience of job planning, medical appraisal, and the management of performance concerns.
  • Experience of developing leadership knowledge and skills in others.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex cultural change in clinical environments with empathy, credibility and emotional intelligence.
  • Proven ability to build trust and influence across diverse clinical groups, particularly during periods of organisational change.
  • Active as a medical appraiser.
  • Experience as Case Investigator or Case Manager.
  • Experience as an enhanced appraiser.
  • Experience of MHPS.
