HMRC is looking for individuals with the experience or aptitude to join a unique dual role combining Data Analyst and Tester responsibilities. You will benefit from a 12-month tailored training programme, mentorship, and excellent career development opportunities.

CREST (Compliance and Risk Engineering Solutions Team), within Risk and Intelligence Service, manages Connect-HMRC's award-winning data analytics, intelligence, and risking platform. The platform has been upgraded, increasing users to 5,000 and around 360 data analysts.

This role has dual functionality with distinct responsibilities:

  • As a Data Analyst: Lead exploration of sophisticated data sets using various analytical tools, support HMRC teams in tackling tax fraud, evasion, and avoidance, and contribute to the compliance strategy.
  • As a Test Engineer: Become a Subject Matter Expert on Connect data sources, develop testing scripts, lead testing phases, and ensure quality assurance before deployment.
Key responsibilities
  • Analyze and interpret data to provide insights and recommendations.
  • Explore innovative data opportunities, evaluate options, impacts, and risks.
  • Collaborate to define analytical scope and requirements.
  • Improve business processes through analysis and best practices.
  • Present data findings effectively.
  • Design, build, and test data products from multiple sources.
  • Maintain and update data models as needed.
Person specification

Strong organizational and project management skills are essential. You should be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues and support various administrative activities such as SharePoint management, issue tracking, presentation delivery, dashboard creation, and data security compliance.

Proficiency in MS Office tools, especially Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and PowerPoint, is required.

Desirable criteria
  • IT and mathematical skills with relevant qualifications or experience.
  • Experience with data modelling tools and techniques (e.g., SPSS, SAS, SQL, R, Python).
  • Data visualization skills, including Power BI.
  • Understanding of data handling legislation and standards.
Training and development

Participation in the Data Analyst Training Programme (DATP) is mandatory. The programme includes modular courses, assessments, and support from mentors and coaches. Travel to Newcastle or Liverpool for training may be required, with expenses paid by HMRC.

Additional information

Location preferences for Benton Park View, Newcastle, are temporary, and relocation may be required in the future.

Technical skills assessment

Skills such as data analysis, communication, data quality assurance, and software proficiency will be evaluated during the selection process.
