Title

Counselor

Job Goals
  • To deliver counseling services to students, parents, staff and others in the interest of individual student development and success in his/her educational program.
  • To support the delivery of the Lee County School District's written, taught, tested, and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement.
  • To ensure the reflection and communication of a positive image and attitude toward decisions and functions of the district as they relate to the public, staff, parents and students.
Qualifications
  • Holds a current MS counselor certification.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in oral and written communication.
  • Displays ability to establish and maintain a positive rapport with students, staff, parents and the public.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Reports To

Building principal or designee

Performance Responsibilities
  1. I. Organizes and administers the guidance program.
    • Administers a student needs assessment.
    • Organizes a Guidance Committee.
    • Plans guidance activities for the school year.
    • Demonstrates evidence of personal organization.
  2. II. Provides individual counseling for students during the school year.
    • Schedules appointments for developmental-educational and career counseling.
    • Provides time for counseling self-referred students and crisis counseling.
    • Conducts an interview with new students.
    • Conducts follow-up of new students.
    • Conducts counseling sessions for students involved in disciplinary actions.
    • Conducts follow-up sessions for students involved in disciplinary actions.
  3. III. Develops and implements a dropout plan which focuses on at risk students at the school.
    • Identifies at risk students.
    • Provides individual counseling and intervention plans to keep students in school.
  4. IV. Provides group guidance and counseling activities with students during the school year.
    • Develops a calendar for group guidance and counseling activities.
    • Plans and conducts group guidance and counseling activities throughout the school year.
  5. V. Coordinates student appraisal.
    • Coordinates maintenance of student records.
    • Coordinates individual and group testing.
    • Interprets student information.
    • Identifies students with special needs.
    • Reviews student progress at the end of each grading period.
    • Serves as school test coordinator.
  6. VI. Develops written long range educational and career plans for each student beginning no later than the seventh grade.
    • Conducts group information sessions on subject selection.
    • Conducts individual guidance sessions on subject selection.
    • Communicates with parents on student progress.
    • Assists in educational planning of students with identified needs.
    • Provides career information.
    • Assists students in self awareness.
    • Coordinates the career center activities and resources with counseling activities.
  7. VII. Assists with referrals and placement.
    • Acts upon referrals from students, teachers, other professional staff, parents, and agencies.
    • Assists in appropriate placement of students with special needs, including 504.
    • Assists the staff with student referrals to alternative placement, special education placement, and other referrals.
    • Utilizes community resources and agencies in providing services.
    • Assists students, parents, and teachers in making use of community resources.
    • Coordinates activities to assist students in preparing for job placement.
    • Develops master schedule and individual student schedules in coordination with building principal.
  8. VIII. Consults with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and other appropriate individuals.
    • Works with family concerning home situations that relate to school attitude and performance.
    • Works with teachers, administrators, and other staff regarding such issues as student attitude, progress, and attendance.
    • Serves as English Language Learner (ELL) and homeless coordinator.
  9. IX. Coordinates program evaluation.
    • Conducts follow up studies of students.
    • Evaluates the guidance program.
    • Revises program periodically as needed.
  10. X. Demonstrates professionalism.
    • Uses correct oral and written communication.
    • Adheres to board/school policies.
    • Adheres to the Ethical Standards of the American Association for Counseling and Development.
    • Exemplifies strong work ethics and professionalism (i.e. promptness, attendance and professional dress).
Terms of Employment

The salary and length of contract shall be established by the Board of Education.
